Aloha kakou e Gangeez,
Lately, we have had only newbies checking in – and bless them for having the courage to do so. But, I think we need to show them that they are not alone; they are part of an ‘ohana with a long lineage – maybe long enough for a geneological chant.
So check in with just a ”Yo” or “Aloha” or whatevaz:
Big Dawg Chunk Me Sarah Andy (yeah, you) Darell Russell (give me some Tassell, RugMan) Dusty Rik Bill Benzel Julie Kitty (who can speak for Kawika and Uncle Sol) Kevin Mark Peter (you know who you are) El Awrence Dusty Sulle Ed The Big Billy P the Slackkey Ed Kalama Garces Don Kauli`a (who is related to everybody, including me and Sarah) KonaBob The Duke Of Hana Dean BreezePlease, late of Nihon Keith Big Fish Of Vegas (AKA Don, on all the cop freqs) Craig Jessay Fran Auntie M Auntie A, B, C, D, E, F, …summorz Jwn Commander an’Cap’n Ross Eric Puna Bing
OK, if I did not list you, e kala mai, or I didn’t think you were hardcore, or I messed up – so kill me, OTW you are posting regularly. (There are reasons us kapuna don’t post ebery day.) So, we turned into lurkers, and we are waiting for Big Things (like books and CDs and stuff).
...Reid
PS. I have a review of a CD in my mind, but it (the CD)is so complex that I haven't figured out how to write about it in a cogent way in over a year of listening to it. (You know what it is.)

Aloha. Here are some random thoughts. It's true, Reid. I've been busy with work and studying for a test on Income Taxation (nope not fun).
Also, struggling to decide what to record for the Taropatch CD3. Hopefully, I will have something for Jesse soon. Time's a tickin'.
So what is everyone else up to out there? I know you Californians have been getting plenty of Hawaiian music. Raiatea Helm will be in NYC this weekend for a concert and talk story, but I will be out of town. Argh... |

This website has brought a disparate group of humans together because of a common interest that transcends open tunings and fingerpicking. When other guitar players ask "What is slack key?" I tell them is Hawaiian fingerstyle guitar, but that doesn't explain the bond between people who love Hawaiian culture and Hawai'i nei. Thanks to everyone for the musical conversation that goes on here everyday. Speaking of CD reviews, I have been listening to Na Palapalai lately ("Ke 'Ala Beauty" album), I can't believe those three can play machine gun uke, beautiful slack key and bass while singing falsetto harmony so beautifully. If I could do that, I would be a happy (and tired) man. It inspires me every time I hear it to keep practicing. Jesse Tinsley |

I'm still here! Been slowly picking up the guitar again and getting back up to speed after 10 months off. Also looking forward to buying a Walkingstick bass from Konabob this weekend at the Southern California Ukulele Festival...I'm starting to think that while I'm a solo slack key player I might be a kanikapila bass player. Time will tell!
In the meantime, my podcasting efforts (godcast.org) continue to generate lots of press...look for me on NBC Nightly News sometime in the near future. The funny thing is that the more I try to avoid the press the more that seems to come my way. (Maybe I should try this approach towards money and see what happens.) In any case, at this point I'm just trying to settle into a routine that isn't too demanding of my time so I have more free time to play!
Finally, I may make an uncredited (and unexpected) cameo appearance on the CD. Stay tuned. And, of course, aloha and welcome to all new members of the TaroPatch `ohana! |
Craig My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can. |

I'm up at 4:30 this morning here in Kaleponi, because my ku`u Lina couldn't sleep and wanted company. She couldn't sleep because she's so excited about taking off this morning for a few weeks in the islands. I hope we'll have plenty of musical adventures to share along the way.

We have concentrated really hard on getting out a couple of decent recordings for the next CD that Jesse is putting together for all of us. It is not an easy thing to do, for lots of reasons. It took up a better part of a month to get them nearly right. If it weren't for all the things that Dave and Lawrence and Mark told me (and *us*), I wouldn't have been able to do the technical stuff at all. One tip, that really made a difference, is the use of part of the pickup signal, blended with those of the mics. It made a real difference in the clarity of the plucked strings (at least to my ears.).
I'm really glad you are getting back into playing Craig, and looking forward to hearing you. I keep looking at the list of names that Jesse has at the beginning of his thread, and hope to see lots more asterisks following names.
We have also managed to start getting our minds around a wonderful new song, and it is interesting in that it reflects something that Peter brought up in one of his first posts: a song that is in Open G, uses all of the cues that sound like slack key (parallel 6ths, both kinds of parallel 3rds, chimes, 4/4 time, even number of measures in a section) and, yet, is not a slack key piece. It is called "The Last Time I Saw Home" and was written by John Pell. It first apeared, IIRC, in Fingerstyle Magazine and is utterly beautiful. Actually, it was first tabbed in G6 (I think that it was so it would be easy for Standard Tuning players to grasp it), but I retabbed it in Taro Patch and that opened up more strings and allowed us to use all the familiar fretting patterns. I am trying to figure out what it is about the song, apart from the absence of an obvious vamp, that makes it something different from slack key. Of course, Sarah can actually play it while I just fumble.
We are also preparing for the Aloha Music Camp in Feb. (Never too early to plan, especially with the airlines being so wierd.) And, we also hope to meet up with all our friends on Maui, as well as making new friends at the Camp.
Which brings up another question: Is the Waihe`e jam still taking place? We haven't heard a peep about in a loooong time. We would love to hang out there again in Feb.
The books I alluded to are Russell's and Peter's and, having had peeks at them, they promise to be important as well as fascinating. I am impatiently waiting for their publication. Hope it is soon.
Andy - a test on Income Taxation? You mean Tax Law? My condolences. Hope it gets over with soon and successfully.
Have a good trip Fran (if you are not yet on a plane) and keep us posted on your adventures.
Sorry, Bing. I suppose I should have been last.
Dusty, aside from my usual Brain Burp, maybe you are on the list twice because I have been stocking up on more of the Golden Gate thumbpicks you gave me and subliminally was thinking about you. It turns out that First Quality Music has lots of them in various configurations and I bought a bunch. They also say that it is Jerry Douglas' favorite pick, for whatever that is worth.
me ke aloha,
Reid

I'a Nui here. Getting ready for the big 10/21 show. Lots of dancers, a great band with Gary Haleamau, even have a ukelele band, and feature players Dennis Kamakahi, Cyril Pahanui, Patrick Landeza.
Weather is beautiful. Its great sitting on the patio in the evening and looking down at the sea of lights in Las Vegas. |

Read was speaking of slacking non-Hawaiian songs, and soon many of you will hear Fran Guidry's slack key version of the old folk song "Grandfather's Clock" on the TP.net CD set. It's good fun. Jesse Tinsley |

Had to deliver a pup half way across the country last weekend. Had plenty of time to learn a new tune from Ozzie's book; Awiwi. Cool little tune with some degree of difficulty when played at higher speeds, which is the object of the piece, according to Ozzie. Anyway, played it enough in the terminals and on the planes that two different flight attendants ans one passenger asked me to stop! Is that a good thing???? |
