Well put, Russell and RJS.
There's no reason to rehash some of the discussions we've had on this issue except to say, we is what we is, and that's all.
Aloha kakou,
Jesse Tinsley

It is not often that I reread posts several times, both for the sheer enjoyment of it and to try to more completely understand the ramifications of what was written. And, I know I will read them again after I have thought about them some more. (As a funny example of one thing that popped into my head: there are mathematical correlates to the things that both of you, Russell and Raymond, wrote - like distance measures and set membership functions and phase separation processes. I can't help it, that's the way my brain functions, or malfunctions, depending on your viewpoint.) Besides, I love amusing alliteration.

Raymond, sometimes I don't agree with you, but your opinion is always worth reading. This time, you are right on. Thanks.

Howdy! This is the check-in thread, right? I'm checking in as possibly the newest (definitely not the youngest) 'patch pardner. I'm brand-spanking new to slack-key (6 months), and working on my 5th song (learning via tablature right now). I've thoroughly enjoyed finding and reading the topics in the 'patch. I'm looking forward to meeting as many of you as life brings together. Being a haole boy, the challenge I read to represent slack-key well is daunting, but then it is also a wonderful honor and opportunity to spread Aloha to those who may never have the opportunity to experience it. And thanks to Karl (Frozen North) and others for their encouragement.

Checking in, here, too.

Welcome, Frank (Deep in the Heart) You've just made a lot of friends. As far as me, I'm playing every Wednesday evening in Cleveland's Little Italy as part of an old-time string band. I'm playing banjo and fiddle with them and I'm slipping in some 'ukulele whenever I can. During breaks I play slack key and the band members love it. If I keep it up maybe I can turn them over to the aloha side!.

Peace to all,

Mark

Reading the Russel and RJS posts about "what is slack key?" got me thinking about music on traditionally Hawaiian instruments and the musicians that play them.

Went to a Jake Shimabukuro concert the other night. The program described him as the "Jimi Hendrix" of the ukulele. He is extremely good, very inventive, and eminently entertaining - thoroughly enjoyed myself. Does he play traditional Hawaiian ukulele music -- I'm sure he can. He is trying to stretch the boundaries of this wonderful little wooden box with strings. You won't (normally) hear Ulupalakua or Green Rose Hula. I have heard some remark they don't like his style as it is not traditional Hawaiian. Too bad, that young man can sure play and create beautiful music. He is capable of playing music in many styles and he has been able to get a very large group of people to point at the ukulele and say, "didn't know you could make those sounds with that little instrument." Did he grow up in Hawaii -yep. Does he play a Hawaiian instrument - yep. Is it Hawaiian Ukulele?

Hey CM.
Thanks for the compliment - I mean that part about not always agreeing with me.
Don't mean that as an insult. I often say things that will irritate people who espouse a "more traditional" viewpoint. I don't do it to irritate. I'm just not at all "traditional" in a lot of my thinking.

I've had the honor of meeting and talking to Jake at the last Three Na Hoku Hanohano Awards in Hawaii. He's a very gracious and talented gentleman. He's performed twice at the awards and has electrified the audience of peers with his musical ability and friendly Aloha Spirit. Standing ovations all times from his fellow performers especially those tradional Hawaiians.

Jake Shimabukuro was born on November 3, 1976, in Honolulu, Hawaii.
While Jake has great respect and love for traditional Hawaiian ukulele music, his mission is to show everyone that the ukulele is capable of so much more.
I've been looking forward to the release of his self-produced fourth solo album, DRAGON. To date he is the recipient of Four Na Hoku Hanohano Awards (Hawaii's Grammy) and four Hawaii Music Awards for his solo and band albums. Bet Dragon is on the Nomination List again this year.

Watch NBC’s Late Night with Conan O’Brien on Tuesday, December 13, 2005 to see Jake play live in his first nationally televised performance!

Aloha kakou, Retro checking in, too, and touching on a couple of topics.

When I first started working as one of the dj's on "Hawai`i Radio Connection," I was asked whether I wanted to be called "Uncle Gregg" or "Braddah Gregg." That was the first and only time I had the choice (I was in my early 40's, and I decided "uncle" was probably the more appropriate option.) Since then, it's always been "uncle" in other settings, like when I play music to accompany the dancers in our halau.

Jake S --- what I've always told people is that he's from Hawai`i, he plays an instrument closely associated with Hawaiian music, he CAN play the "traditional" songs (check his pre-solo work as a member of Pure Heart), but I would not describe his current sounds as "Hawaiian music." Neither does he. What he does is unique and something I really enjoy hearing; I like people who break down descriptive barriers, anyway.

Lea - very nice picture!

As for purity in who can play what - well, no one has more zeal than the convert, that's for certain; I am proof o' that (as are many of the folks here, who keep it all alive and growing.)

Hey Duke,

Nice to see you again. Andy is right: Sig Zane rules :-) And, I thought that I had cornered that market (at least in Wailuku)after Andy had snarfed up all that were in his size.

BTW, is Sig related to Pat? Both are from the BI, and Zane is an Americanized version of a Chinese name that can't have been altered in the same way very often.

Also, I didn't know you had gotten a Rainsong. How do you like it?

Me ke aloha pumehana,

Reid

Reid, Andy-- Howzzzz it??

Yes, Sig rules and so too folks who wear him :)

Reid: Ha! I never made the Pat/Sig connection. I'll have to ask her. She's from Kohala so maybe? The Rainsong is my oldest "good" guitar. I like it quite a lot. It seems at home in F-Wahine tuning so I leave it there. Look forward to seeing you this wintah. Islandboo is coming to Hana during her trip, maybe you and Sarah too? Maybe we can talk Kawika 'n Popoki into venturing over this way with you.

Duke, visiting you and Hana again could be a real possibility. I'll have to talk to Kawika 'n Popoki about it. That would be a real fun party. I'll let you know as things develop.

Shaka,
