Aloha kakou -
Keola Donaghy has put up the following post on nahenahe.net, and I thought folks here might be interested:
quote: This semester I was given the task of teaching and updating a class at UH-Hilo entitled "The History and Development of Hawaiian Music". It's been a blast, and as I have been teaching it, I've been simultaneously trying to develop the resources so that the class can be taught online. I'm toying with the idea of offering the class in the spring semester, if our faculty supports the idea and if I can get all of these resources together. The class is not a performance class, you don't need to sing or play an instrument or record yourself doing anything. It is about the development of the various sub-genre of Hawaiian music, from older chant and hula forms, hymns, hapa-haole, falsetto, slack key, 'ukulele, steel guitar, the Hawaiian Renaissance era to today. Some of the lectures will probably be done as podcasts, and there will be other online resources as well.
I'm undecided if the class will be done in a credit or non-credit format, or the exact cost. It would likely be in the $300 range (possibly slightly higher if it is for credit) as it would need to be done through the university. If you are interested in such a class, please email me and let me know if you have a preference for the class to be in a credit or non-credit format.
(There is an email link within the post on his website)
Me ke aloha,
Debbie
