This is not slack key related, but I think it might be worth the post. (Bottom line is that repeated listenings to this disk have slowly spilled over into my playing. People at the restaurant at which I play have made positive comments about things that I'm trying to apply from my listening to this disk - and I can't play even 1 of the songs on the disk.) For those of you who might like to hear the poetry that a guitar is capable of, I strongly urge you to pick up "Music of Torroba," by David Russell, Telarc CD. I've seen it a couple of times at places that sell used CD's.
Just a few words...
Torroba is a modern Spaniard (b. 1891) whose compositions run towards highly lyrical songs, not so much flamenco, duende, etc. He was a well travelled musician, and the songs on this disk show many influences including "post Debussey" chord progressions, blues, ragtime, early jazz - but remain quitessentially Spanish in tone and feel. Much of the music on this disk was composed for Segovia -- butI much prefer Russell's interpretations. This man's ability to create tonal nuances blows me away. I have listened to this disk many many times, and I have not found 1 note or nuance that I think is off - and I can be a really critical bugger. This has been on my list of top 5 recordings for some time.
The only drawback for me in listening to this disk is that sometimes I get deprssed over my crappy playing. But that's my stuff.
The disk is really a feast for the ears and imagination.
