I'm reposting this from Keola Donaghy's www.nahenahe.net.
quote: I picked up my Grammy ballot on the way to the airport yesteday, and did not have net access until just this evening. Here is a list of the nominees eligible entries for the 2006 Hawaiian Album of the Year Grammy...
'Ale'a - KAULUPONO Kawika Alfiche - NALEI Kapono Beamer - SLACK KEY DREAMS OF THE PONOMOE Troy Fernandez - HAWAIIAN STYLE UKULELE Halau O Kekuhi - PUKA KAMA'EHU Hapa - MAUI Hawai'i Loa - FROM MY HEART - ALOHA WAU IA 'OE Raiatea Helm - SWEET & LOVELY Kawaikapuokalani Hewett - ULU KAU Ledward Ka'apana - KI-HO'ALU - HAWAIIAN SLACK KEY GUITAR Kamakele ''Bulla'' Ka'iliwai - NA HULUKUPUNA Natalie Ai Kamauu - 'E0 Kaumakaiwa Kanaka'ole - WELO Sonny Lim - SLACK KEY GUITAR: THE ARTISTRY OF SONNY LIM Lono - OLD STYLE II - THE CONTINUAL PERPETUATION OF THE FOLK MUSIC OF HAWAII Sean Na'auao - KA 'EHA KE ALOHA Herb Ohta, Jr. & Daniel Ho - 'UKULELES IN PARADISE Brittni Paiva BRITTNI X 3 - 'UKULELE & SLACK KEY GUITAR INSTRUMENTALS Pali - IN HARMONY Dennis Pavao - THE GOLDEN VOICE OF HAWAI?I - VOL. 1 Norman Ka'awa Solomon - NA MELE O KAUAI Paul Togioka - KI-HO'ALU INN. Bryan L. Tolentino - KA 'UKULELE LELE Various Artists - HAWAIIAN STEEL VOL.3 - BYRD'S NEST Various Artists - MASTERS OF HAWAIIAN SLACK KEY GUITAR - VOL. 1 Various Artists - 'OHANA - VOLUME ONE
While the list is lacking the star power of Keali'i Reichel, The Brothers Cazimero, Ho'okena, etc., there is still many excellent releases on the list, and I have no problem pinpointing the five I'll cast my vote for on the preliminary ballot. As has been my unspoken policy for the past 10 years, I'll make no endorsements, not say who I'm voting for, nor will I make any predictions. Good luck to all entries.
I should add that I found Gypsy Pacific's "Wela" listed in the Contemporary World Music category, which is very curious. The songs are mostly Hawaiian standards and contemporary songs, and musically it is more jazz than world music to me. I've email Tom Conway to find out if that's where he submitted it or if someone on the selection committee moved it. That happened to one Hawai'i release last year. Still looking for other Hawai'i releases under different categories.
Just wanted to highlight the eligible entries. Congrats to everyone - especially the Taropatchers!

Just for the sake of clarification, these are not the nominees. These are the albums from the past year that have been deemed eligible to be considered as nominees. Recording Academy members may choose up to five albums from this list that they feel should be the nominees (then from the top five vote-getters, which will be considered the nominees, members will choose - in mid-December - the winner.)
Keola has posted a correction on Nahenahe.net as well. |
