I was just listening to an interview of Jake Shimabukuro on Voice of America and learned that he has a name for his main ukulele. It revealed a little of his personality. It seems he had a crush on a certain female TV actress and named his ukulele - Buffy!
I understand Keola Beamer has names for his guitars.
I am curious. Have any of you named your ukulele(s) or guitar(s) [kika]?

Yep, me too. I have 2 matching Lowdens "Ono" and "Nani". I recently (within 2 years) purchased a Carvin 12 string from their custom shop. It's a semi hollow body (solid body with a small sound "hole") 24 fret Koa beauty with a accoustic pick up. I call her "Pele" because she is a beauty, but (due to the sustain) can be a beast as well! Musicians can be a strange lot... Ray

Ditto! They are: Sybil, Reagan, and Damien (all slack key possessed guitars!).

I know it is an old tradition in stringed instruments - thew old violin and lute makers used to name their instruments. Mosern Day harp makers tend to name their instruments. |

In the beginning, Sarah gave her guitars poetically appropriate Hawaiian names, and after I got one or two, she named mine also. However, over time, there is only one that we now call by anything other than the luthier's name and the body wood (as we each have similar guitars made by the same luthiers). That one is the Big Goose Spruce Goodall GC, known, obviously as "The Goose". The rest are just called "the koa Mauel" or "your McCollum".
I know, we must have lost our romanticism.

This one just begs to be called "The Spruce Goose!" |

Is it bad when others call my guitar "Oh no"? Just kidding. |

Two of four guitars have names that my wife gave them, that have stuck. The first one is a pawn shop rescue Martin D-15 circa '99, "Brownie"which was scratched onto the headstock by the former owner,-mama's favorite guitar!! The other one she named "Napua" after a sweet granddaughter of one of my best friends who reciently passed on. It's also a Martin-2001 OM-16-perfect guitar for these open tunings (small and sweet!).God bless, Pastor Harry |

My favorite is my old '76 Takemine 12-string S400, "Pedro" named after Puaho's deceased dad. A very sweet, kind, and special man who told a lot of stories. When I play this guitar, I like to think I'm playing meles of his stories. It is, a very special guitar to me. My #2 12-String is "Bastard Bob" the one guitar I never bought, but was given to me by my good friend, Bob Lee. Because it wasn't part of my original guitar ohana it became known as bastard bob. #1 6-String (Takemine) is "So-Liva" named after Puaho's deceased older sister, Sophia and mom, Oliva. A sister with a kind generous heart with no boundries, and a mom full of life and fire up to the age of 91. A very cherished guitar #2 6-String (electric) is "Greg" after Greg Ulman of the Ulman Bros. His guitar solo on 'Blue Sky' has got to be one the greatest guitar rips ever. I would love to learn that riff so bad. #3 6-String is simply "The Runt" its a small parlor Harmony piece-of-s... I just trash around. Its warped, scratch, beat-up, and can't hold a tune very long. But its small enough to play while I lounge in my recliner. ha ha #4 6-String is "Pueao" (not sure if I spelled that right, the hawaiian word for owl) I always try to play the guitar without looking at the strings, ( a bad habit) so I would practice in a dark room. To "see" like an owl. I still can't do it. :-( But its a great guitar, it is the one I have all the autographs on it. My next, and last guitar will eventually be a Taylor, maybe sometime in 2007, no name yet but I have somme good ideas. pau, -slkho |
