A close friend with ties to Hawaii just died (this is the person for whom I wrote "Counting Stars," posted elsewhere,) - one of his last requests was for me to find a Hawaiian prayer or chant suitable for his memorial service and to recite or chant it.
Can anyone either send me such a prayer or chant, or can you refer me to someone who might be able to help.
The ceremony will be Dec. 10 (lots of out of town family) so if I get it soon I can practice. I have a contact who can help with pronounciation but doesn't have a lead on the actual prayer/chant.

Ray,
So sorry about your friend. You might try getting ahold of Liko Puha. He's a master chanter and could probably find something appropriate.

Keali'i Reichell does this song:
Wanting Memories
It is not a Hawaiian song but can be done in a chant form as he does, and I think it was first written as a memorial song.
On the tip of my brain is another chant/song but it eludes full awareness at the moment.

Aloha no, mina mina,
Ray, I'm not sure it would help, but I do know, and can supply a copy of the Lords Prayer. Here, at hula class our kumu always trys to teach students the prayer as their very first Hawaiian lesson. Little bites at a time. He says once you learn it, you have something that is appropriate for nearly anything. It's just a thought, but I could also provide a cassette or something to show you the "cadence" that we do at the beginning and end of every hula class. Let me know if this would be helpful.

Ray, Thank you, but I think I'm going to work with someone to compose a mele innoa. Raymond |
