This is fascinating. All the more reason to just make your own music! Hopefully Dancing Cat never thinks this is a good idea. Jesse Tinsley |

Boy you are keeping sharp there slackkeymike!
I was just reading about (and downloading PsTools and Process Explorer to help fix such problems) yesterday. Sony is shooting itself in the foot again. They already ruined the new 1GB minidisc with idiotic (and I do mean idiotic) digital rights management, making it essentially useless. Now they are ruining the other end of their business.
I will try my best not to buy anything from Sony (or their content arms, MCA, etc...) again!

I'm glad I slogged through all the tech talk -- the last 2 paragraphs tell the story -- no more Sony |

Raymond, "No more Sony" is right (although I never have bought any of their content, and ATRAC CP is easy to hack off). BUT, if you read through all the commentary on the blog, Sony is like a virus with many strains. It is really hard to know when you are dealing with the buggahs. Besides, there are other businesses that behave like them. So, the things to do are NOT putting any CD or DVD with DRM in your computer's reader (and, to be safe, not buying it at all, because some unsuspecting family member might do it), shutting off Autorun - see:
http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2005/06/03/424802.aspx
and making all accounts but yours a User, without Administrator privileges.
I admit to not having done the last two things consistantly, but I have now.

Hey... not fair! Mac's are NOT immune to viruses and spyware!
(but they might get less attention from malware creators, simply because there are fewer users, and therefore fewer malware creators).

Craig, if more people bought a Mac (it is now 4-5%) the bad guys would focus their attention on Macs, and you would be very unhappy - there is presently no bar to crackers on any OS. So you should be happy that so many of us have Wintels. In addition, that Sony CD most likely couldn't have even be played on a Mac, so Macophiles are deprived of music they might want to hear. Besides, the comments noted how Sony's DRM had already messed up Apple's iPod and iTunes mechanisms.
Most folks, including the Evil Empire M$, believe that content is destined to be distributed via networks, in any case. So, Podcasts are good, as are downloads, and P2P networks are becoming more justifiable. Jobs certainly accelerated that trend.
Also, one of the commenters in that blog noted that the first time he had ever encountered a "rootkit" was long ago in Linux, another supposedly well designed OS, not Windows.
The next target, as we know, will be the networks themselves. The net is just computers connected by wires or fiber or radio waves. There have already been assaults on Cisco routers, and cell phones have been cracked (Yeah, Paris' :-)
Enjoy what you can, while you can.

Just be careful of what you stick in your computer. DRM is a big hint. Downloaded music can have the same crap tagged on. Use the RootKit Revealer often like antivirus and anti-spyware programs. Pretty soon, they will all come in a single package. I think Norton has done some of this.
Another solution is to use, say, Linux, with VMWare installed on top with a Windows virtual machine. Since the virtual OS (in this case, Windows)is simply a file on the Linux machine, its easy to make a "pristine" copy to reload once things go awry. This is perhaps a bit technical for most, but if you want to maintain your privacy and your rights, you are going to have to stay up to speed on this stuff.
Anybody here tried the RootKit revealer? Be warned, empty your Norton recycle bin (if you have one) and clean out your Temporary Internet Files and Cookies directories first...too many false positives otherwise.

Actually, that was what prompted me to post...if you read the comments again you'll note that the only problems imported the Sony CDs into iTunes is on the Windows side. On the Mac the CDs play just fine and import into iTunes (and the iPod) just like any other CD. I know from personal experience but you can also check this link referenced in the comments:
http://bigpicture.typepad.com/comments/2005/10/drm_crippled_cd.html
Especially note the very last paragraph, where Suncomm themselves (the company whose DRM software Sony is using) notes that:
"If you have a Mac computer you can copy the songs using your iTunes Player as you would normally do."

Have been for 21 years. (I've used Windows 50-60 hours a week for at least 12 years too..I use Windows because I have too, use the Mac because I want to.) |
