First off, I want to say that I not only love slack key, I passionately involved in Hawaiian music. In fact, lots of times listening to singers and non slack key instrumentalists gives lots of insight into songs and ideas for developing slack key arrangements, so....
Melveen Leed is back doing concerts. Saw her the other day with the Makaha Sons. Most highly recommend catching her act if she comes near you.
Melveen is one of us "older" folks -- the first Hawaiian singer to be a regular on Grand Ole Opry. She mixes a lot of country with her Hawaiian stuff. But when she sings Hawaiian -- she can just blow you away. On Sunday she did a version of E Ku'u Morning Dew during which I couldn't keep the tears back. Then I looked around, kind of self-conscious and em-bare-assed -- I stopped counting others wiping off tears at 12, and there were more. Her recordings are all older stuff, but still worth having. She has a great one with Atta that's a gem.
Anyway, Melveen has been off the circuit for the last 4 years and seems to be getting back into things. If you notice that she's coming near you, it will be a real treat. Raymond San Jose, CA
