Aloha Jake! Thanks for checking in! What part of LA have you landed in? If you're around during the holidays, be sure to come to the Manhattan Beach kanikapila. I don't know if Doug posted it yet, but on Jan 8th Keoki Kahumoku will be giving a slack key workshop while Herb jr and Daniel thrill the ukulele folks with their ukulele secrets. If you can get to Torrance, I have an excellent kumu from Moloka`i who lived with his uncle Johnny Almeida during WWII in Honolulu. His name is Chuck Ka`imikaua, or Uncle Mahi... I enjoy my lessons as much for the "talk story" as for the music. As for kau kau - there's lots around, especially in Gardena - but also Torrance, Manhattan Beach, Oceanside etc. I hope you enjoy your stay here; I know it's way too cold, but other than that, it's a pretty fine place to be. Hi auntie Nancy, Thanks for the info. I'm going back to Hawaii this friday and I wont be back till the evening of Jan. 8th so I'll miss the workshop and kanikapila. I went to the workshop 2 years ago at the JACCC with Keoki and George Kahumoku along with Ozzie Kotani and it was great. I was thinking of contacting Keoki over my break and maybe try to take some lessons from him since I think I live close to him. I'd be interested in taking some lessons from Uncle Mahi when I come back up so maybe I'll ask you more about it later. oh yeah, right now I live in west LA. so if anyone else is around here, id be up for a jam session whenever get time...remember im only a beginner though, so cant promise anything good. Thanks again for everything auntie, mele kalikimaka to you too!

Hi Jake - That's where Daniel HO lives..... He is unbeliebable busyl, but you could get lucky, you never know. And it's not so far to come down this way if you pick your time on the 405. Uncle is retired from his day job so has time to make for you. There will be Patrick's workshop in Whittier at the end of January too, which is not really so far. Jus' Pres'!! Have a good trip home!! n |
