Anyone own or seen one of the above? Just taken delivery-very nice instrument. Body same size as UAE148 Tenor but has shorter scale, closer to Soprano. Mystery is, Kaman Corp'n who make Ovation/Applause say there is no such model. JHS, Ovation agaents in UK, say likewise. Only mention online is on Japanese sites, that I can't read! The uke is brand new.
Is this a discontinued model or a limited edition? Anyone know? Thanks.

It's supposedly brand new. Do your searches with a dash: UAE-158.
Some interesting comments about ordering ahead of store deliveries, waiting 4 months for arrival.... on eBay!

Still doesn't solve the mystery, unless it's a knock-off. You would think Ovation/Kaman would know their product line. I couldn't find any evidence of it on Kaman's web page, but then their web page may be out of date with emerging models.

Have you E-mailed the E-bay dealer you bought it from to ask where he got it from?
On the first Japanese page link the person is just describing the features of the ukulele. It says its an "Applause Tenor" and the they mention the multiple soundholes where you can see the Kaman label. The japanese characters after the date of 1999/08 mean "purchase/bought", so it's not a new ukulele. They also mention that's it fairly heavy and you defintely need a strap. Also says they like the position markers in this compared to the UA148, and also mentions playing it through an amp with effects.
The second japanese page under the Ovations mentions that the body is not made of wood but carbon fiber. Under the UAE158 it is just describing the ukulele: pickup, volume, tone, equalizer, nylon strings, 18 frets, cutaway, etc.
Doesn't really help in solving the mystery.

Thanks Gerald, that's interesting. The Ebayer apparently got 12 of them from Ovation UK but they have never been available in shops here in UK. Maybe its a deleted item but the one I have is brand new. |

I've seen 2 or 3 Applause ukuleles in the Seattle area. All were in the hands of "local" folks. The hardware on them is good and they have good playablility. I saw the same body at Guitar Center strung for mandolin, 8 strings. The Kaman products move the air differently, a different sound. Interesting to play. |
