Hey Gramps! is that where you wait for the mail drops from the bush pilots??? !! hee hee That hoar frost (rime) looks like the sort down in Patagonia @ cerre torre. I finally bought my -40 sleeping bag & North Face down parka. All that's left is a set of crampon compatiable plastic boots. Maybe I should test drive it on Denali. yuk-yuk ~slkho

Rik, Actually, the mail comes 12 miles farther down the road, where the great seal of the state of alaska hauls himself (herself? hard to tell) out of the pack ice with the bag of letters for Santa and other stranded souls like myself If you need a backpacker, you can borrow mine. Plastic boots? What, can't afford the real thing? Them's the only feets you got pal. And they need to get you up and down! |

Andy If, in the past, i have painted too good a picture or our little burg of North Pole, here is a picture of it today. Minus 52 degrees, ice fog so thick you cnnot see 100 yards, and this is 10 times better than in Fairbanks where you can barely make out a stoplight from 50 feet! Actually, North Pole looks better this way!

Hi Uncle Karl! That guitar looks gorgeous!! I can't wait to hear you play it! I think the end of the neck that you cut off looked like a weapon, but it wouldn't have done much against the bears or wolves. By the way, your gas prices are comparable with ours here less than a mile from the Chevron refinery. Hope you're thinking of Las Vegas in April. aloha nui! n |

Nancy, First off, whre do you think oil comes from? Here. We even have a gas refinery in the state, and it still costs more here. But, as far as i'm concerned, adn i am very concerned, gas should cost at least $5 a gallon. Then perhaps folks would not waste so much of it, this stupid super-size me country would stop making Hummers, we would not have an oil-fired administration waging wars to secure profits for their buddies at the expense of the lives of our young soldiers, and perhaps Ford and GM would not be closing plants faster than i build guitars
Secondly, on a friendlier note, i must be missing something here...what's the deal about Las Vegas? Last time i thought you typed LV instead of LA by mistake. Whazzup?
Rik, plastic must be the deal, then. I don't do mountains so know nothing about it. I've been conent to be able to see Denali on clear days from Fairbanks (180 miles away), fly around it at almost oxygen deprived altitudes of 12,000-14,000 feet in my plane, still lookiing UP at another mile of the behenmoth, and pouring concrete at the visitors center there in 1973 for a crystal clear view of this gorgeous mountain for over 14 hours straight, just five miles across the valley. That still ranks as one of the highlights of my life. I guess it ould be cool to look down from the top, but i hate climbing down thins much worse than going up...you can see where the heck you are, and that scares the begeebies out of me. More power to you, you young whipper-snapper Gramps |

Hi there! Ianui - Don Narup, honorable founder of SCSKS is opening his home to us in April for a mega-kani ka pila. I figured you'd have fun if you managed to get down here. My guess is that you skip the kanikapila section since you Are slack key in the North. While you're dodging hore frost, I'm trying to get enough water and fertilizer on plants to keep something growing instead of just weeds. I actually had a plumeria blossom a couple days ago and the trees are confused enough that they haven't dropped their leaves yet. Take good care of Rik when he comes your way! Aloha, n |

Eh, Karl! Nice da guitar! You gonna put'em in C6 tuning? I've been listening to the George Kuo - Barney Isaacs CD. Amazing what a C6th can do. April 1st and 2nd is a ki ho'alu workshop in Seattle with Patrick Landeza, Dennis Kamakahi and Cyril Pahinui. You going? |

Thumbs I was seriously thinking of Seattle March 31-April 2. But then, Nancy, what dates is/are LV? Goofed up on the guitar...I started putting finish on, and after the third coat I found a spot on the fingerboard at the first fret where i had neglected to remove all the glue from the fret marker. I stupidly used a small power sander to remove it and dug too deep. It is just a slight depression the would probably be a big deal if this were actually a fretted instrument, but since the fingerboard is just for marking purposes, it should only be a cosmetic blemish...one of many. It will still look good from where you are, though:) Say, Andy, I guess i don;t know how to use those emoticons yet....came thru with parenthesese and other wierd stuf...where did i go wrong? |

Not sure if this is useful to you, but some info from my sculpting days: One way to patch small dents, "depressions," etc -- take a piece of the wood in question and sand it down to a lot of fine powder, mix with clear drying glue (eg white glue) to a fairly dense slurry, put it into the depression. Practice on scrap to get the right sawdustr/glue mix. When dry, CAREFULLY sand off. Another way, if the depression is fairly minor is to steam it out. Of course, both of these repairs will pretty much require major work of the finish. |

I'm not sure how that happened. I fixed it though. You do not need the 'insertjavascript' - just [ :) ] without the spaces will result in |

Hi Karl, Las Vegas (nearby, actually) is April 22nd, 23rd. good time to come down! The hore frost should all be melted by then.... oh yeah, no hore frost at this latitude.... I'm guessing flights are cheaper into LV, but I'm most likely driving if you come into LAX. Sure hope to see you!!! aloha nui, n |

Raymond I actually did just that on a small defect whre the top met the side in one spot, but this area on the fingerboard is about an inch square...don't know what i was thinking when i did it! To large to fill in, but also so very shallow as to not be an obvious visual mess. it really would only make a difference (maybe) if you were to have to fret the 1st or 2nd string behind the first fret, and then maybe only a small increas in pitch might result . Since this is a slide instrument, only the pickiest examiner will notice the defect, and i can just cross that guy off the list of friends. That would bring the list down to 3. Karl |
