I disagree.

I think we should additionally add a 'Eastern European Polka' section.
As Polka is one of the driving forces behind slack-key, it's only natural that it be added. We can't forget that when the Polish and Lithuanian Polka masters landed on the Hawaiian islands in the late 19th century, their influence was considered the 'driving force' behind the Hawaiians even picking up the guitar.

BTW....anybody, Raymond?....have any of Gunnar NaPili' Steinhauser's early albums?

Cheers,
His Holiness,
The Piffle

Well... now it leaks out!

It is a rarely discussed legend that the famous polka duo, the Schmenge Brothers (dey ver..."der Happy Vanderers."), spent time with the vaqueros who came out to tame the cattle of Mokupuni Nui. Upon arrival, the accordion was replaced with a slacked guitar whilst the yodeling tradition was kept and thereon grew a new legendary musical style. Any over-educated hypointellectual ethnomusicologist can be easily convinced (with sufficient quantities of Bavarian Ale) that they can hear the distict polka strains that subliminally lie within such classics as Opihi Moemoe for example.

John Hartford, banjoist, remarked, "Style is based on limitation."
As to kordeens, Gabby Pahinui said (in his interview with Dave Gard-sp?) that the first time he heard ki ho'alu was a guitar accompanied by a squeezebox. Manu Lono (she was a Ho'opi'i) told me her mom played button accordion.
My buddy Jack maintains that there are only 2 kinds of music, good and bad, and that he plays them both.
Cabbage rolls and coffee, um um good!

I don't much care, but my response time on this website has been getting pretty slow lately. Is that because of all the traffic? Or all the stuff not archived?

Yeah, if you can dredge up old re-runs of the Lawrence Welk show, you will surely be inspired by the similarities of his Champagne Music and Don Ho. Even Welk's bass player used an open tuning, as did the drummer. And those Semonski Sisters, actually neighbors of mine back in New jersey, were hula all they way.
And, then there's them Cajuns.......

Good points all around. With respect to Mike & Mika'ele, I too agree with Pauline, RJS, & Sarah in keeping this forum mainly in the direction of its original focus. Music in general is a cross mix of other styles, which is good. Slack key is no exception.
Willie K, Cyril, Led, Dennis, etc... have really infused Hawaiian music stylings/tunings to country music in Nashville. Their eating it up over there. So I guess the argument would be if it can be done there, why not here? I'll let that thought cook for awhile.
(I hope I made some sense after re-reading this).

Led plays "San Antonio Rose", Dennis Kamamkahi plays 5-string banjo, he loves Bluegrass, Peter Moon played a 5-string on "U Pass Long" on a Sunday Manoa album.

Yes...

Dennis Kamakahi is interested in a very wide range of Musical Styles, as are other Kihoalu Masters, but this is in perfect harmony with the perspective set forth by the legendary Schmenge Brothers (herein expounded upon above).

Truly, one has not yet really begun to live until one has experienced the Schmenge Star Wars Polka.
