Correction, deep-fried cheese curds are the perfect accompaniment to spam musubi. Menudo ain't bad either. Lute fisk is, however, not for the faint of heart. |

Yer on the right track. I was lucky enough to sample Spam sushi, whilst listening to the Schmenge Star Wars Polka. The experience was nothing short of nirvana. Which brings up the interesting point that the late, great Kurt Cobain got his start as a 'for hire' Mariachi player. He and friends would entertain the patrons of the local Starbucks. Working mostly for tips....mostly. Kurt's instrument was an open tuned accordian. Quite the sight, with their colorful sombreros, aloha shirts, and ungainly assortment of open tuned instruments, grinding out polka favorites in a less than nahenahe style. |

Yeah...
Somehow it always boils down to food. With all this discussion of food I thought it appropriate to mention that it "Smells like Nirvana" in here, which of course brings up a certain open-tuned accordion player by the name of Al Yankovic, who always wears an Aloha shirt. It is worth noting that Al's musical dismemberment also encompassed (surrounded? laid siege to?) nearly all popular music styles. Thank goodness he did not take a public interest in slack key.

When I was a kid, I thought eveyone's dad played accordion. My dad did, my mom's dad did, most of my dad's friends did. The great Scandihoovian dilemma over the first paycheck in this country: Do vee buy shoes or a kordeen? Ya, well, you can't dance wit'out no shoes, but it's even harder to dance wit'out no kordeen! |

No pan-musical discussiojnn would be complete without bagpipes (kordeens and banjos already been trashed). The way i see it, there is a direct link between the droning bagpipe and the constant bass of open tunings played wid da "tumb" as thumbs calls it. Wanna learn da bagpibes? Dis da drone, come back in tree weeks. |

How come no discussion forum for ohe hano ihu?
Maybe banned by the Missionaries? quote: Known as “he mea ho‘oipoipo” or “a thing for lovemaking”, the nose flute is said to have been used to communicate messages between lovers as well as to accompany hula.

We had a piper on our rugby team. He would dress in full scottishregalia before each match, and pipe us on to the pitch. Quite impressive, but the less-culturally inclined/tolerant call his efforts the "Dying Cat Band". And, no, it did not improve our performance, either |

Just to keep the sharp focus of this discussion going...
Besides the Grammy for the Slack Key Masters last night...
...the Grammy Award for Polka went to:
Shake, Rattle And Polka! Jimmy Sturr And His Orchestra [Rounder Records]

There's a meat market near me that might have it. I always have Frank's on hand. Helps with the hot licks. |

If you're going to be talking chilis........Chili Girls Brand. My persnl favorite is 'Bad Girls in Heat' Pumpkin Habanero Hot Sauce. It makes the long accordian solos seem so....short.
