Suggestions? I think I like the earphone capability... Not wanting to spend more than $30-40 if I do not have to, but open to suggestions.

Aloha Mike,
I own a Abine Metrotune MT9000. It's done pretty well for me. It has volume control, metronome, and is a chromatic tuner as well. It has a jack for earphones and of course, your usual input for your plug-in/clip-on tuner pickup. I think it was around $40.00.
good luck,

Not to highjack this, but...anybody have experience with that tuner that mounts under the face of the guitar and peeks out through the soundhole? Does it affect the sound of the guitar? |

No bother...but I've never found a tuner that could get in my guitar.

I have Wittman Mini tuners mounted in several guitars. They require a 9 volt battery, so if I have already have a pickup battery in the guitar I wire them up to the same battery. I can't say I've noticed any effect on the tone.

Fran,
How does that tuner work? How do you know when tuning has been achieved? Some kind of audible signal? What about other tunings besides standard?

Mike, please check the link above and the one below.
I don't know how it works. Probably a pitch to voltage converter and a phase locked loop, all implemented on a large scale integration chip, would be my guess.
Or, it works well.
There are a bunch of lights. One letter for each note in the scale C scale (white keys on the piano.) One dot in between where appropriate for the half steps (black keys on the piano). One for sharp, one for flat, one for just right. When the correct lights come on, I'm in tune.
No audible signal.
It's chromatic, that is, it senses and displays all twelve notes of the scale, so it can be used for any tuning. Even banjos.

I gave up and bought a gnome, a metrognome that is...one that isn't ashamed to get his nails done.
