Here I am with a couple of weeks yet on the Big Island. I've been in touch with John Keawe and will be calling Konabob. I'd be grateful for any suggestions for anything else I shouldn't miss while here.

| Get to Waimea and find Mana Road (it actually starts in town and ends at the Saddle Road). Dirt, but some of it is drivable for a while. If you're a hiker or runner or biker, do it. It's about 40 miles of Parker-Ranch range (there may be other ranches) on the NW slope of Mauna Kea. Green rolling hills, wild turkeys, pheasant, lots of horses and cattle. Certainly off the tourist track and worth the effort. Summer in Montana on a pacific island. One of my favorite places in the world. |

That's because so many people are so friendly there, Konabob. Thanks for relating the story. I'll bet it was Bruce E. and his wife, Karol who were visiting...I tell everyone to go see you nice people on Friday mornings at Keahou. |

If you are adventurous, try hiking into Pu'u O'o from the Park. Its 17 miles round trip and worth it. Try hiking up Mauna Loa from the NOAA station, 12 miles round trip, and also worth it. Start both at day light and be prepared. Ho'okena State Park, south of Captain Cook is a good place to chill out and play kika ki ho'alu, if it isn't crowded. Find the steamers over by Pahoa for a natural sauna but don't leave anything in your car. Black Sand beach and South Point are cool places to visit. Find the huli huli chicken vendor over at Paradise Gardens south of Hilo, great food. Take the scenic drive north of Hilo, then drive over to Waipio Valley, drive down to the bottom for the beach and hike into the waterfall. Eat all the papaya you can stand.

Aloha, all -
I'm just back to a very chilly Northwest. Thanks so much for all of your suggestions. I got to do many of them and some others such as getting a lesson from John Keawe and also listen to him play for 3 1/2 hours at one of the resorts North of Kona. What a neat and friendly guy! As well as being a slack key master. I asked and you may be interested to know that he is open to doing performances elsewhere when he and Hope come to California at the end of June/early July. Also, he is preparing a new CD with many original pieces.
I also got to meet Konabob (who was likewise so welcoming) and to see his amazing invention of a unique electric bass.
We stayed near Hilo which turned out to be much more our cup of tea than Kona. Not too much rain except at night, but I did need my L.L. Bean down vest each morning. Kauai, however, remains our favorite.
Mahalo again for the kokua with my trip. I would be happy to share my 2 cents' worth with anyone else who is going. Once again, it is great to have the T.P.net ohana to consult with. Thanks for being there.
