aloha everyone, my name is mark, but Kumu calls me Kamakani. im 17 years old. Im not really Hawaiian, but i am at heart. My girlfriend dances hula and that is how i was introduced to the culture and things like that. I had been playing guitar for 3 or 4 years before i really got into the hula and the music. I ended up jammin all the Uncles and Aunties at hula practice, and i eventually bought a ukulele, which i love. I played ukulele at E Hula Mau, (which is a big Hula competition in California, if you didnt know) for my girlfriends Halau. it was great, i was so into the culture and everything. just last night i decided to tune my guitar to taro patch, and it was raining, so i played for about an hour straight and it was very intense and i have never felt so deep into music like that. im looking forward to expanding my knowledge at this forum.

Kamakani welcome to the patch. You will find mostly a bunch of older guys and gals (sort of uncles and aunties but maybe not quite deserving the titles yet) willing and able to help in any manner with your playing, your interest in any and all things hawaiian, and occassionally give you a hard time Keep your ears open for all kinds of music, but it seems you have already been smitten with the soul of slack key guitar. |

E komo mai,
Keep checking the Performance and Kanikapila threads. There are a number of great get togethers in SoCal.

Welcome Mark
I met my Hawaiian girlfreind when I was 15 and she too introduced me to Hawaiian music and culture. I'm now 48 (another old guy from norcal) and we've been married for 25 years.
You have discovered a great forum. Lots of aloha here.

Mark,
Welcome to the 'patch. Sounds like you're having fun over there. Don't worry - it's not all 'older' guys and gals here! Anyway, it's just experience.
Thanks for introducing yourself. |

Mark, welcome to the group. Always good to meet musicians, especially those interested in Hawaiian music. Keep checking regularly for announcements regarding upcoming performances. Of particularly interest might be the "Kanikapila" section for regularly scheduled get togethers in your area... |

Mark, Welcome to the forum. We at SCSKS would like you to join us some time. I'm not as old as some of the "ancients" but I'm very close. We have slack key players of all abilities trying to help each other improve and to provide education and encouragement. Kumu Bill, Kumu Keith, Kumu Dusty, and Kumu Terry have some really nahenahe licks. Check the topics for SCSKS Open Mike or Kanikapila.

Hi Mark, Welcome to Taro Patch!
Well, here's a young person. I'm from Hawaii, and live in Hawaii. My name is Brittni, I'm also 17, and I play ukulele, guitar, bass, and some other stuff, and have a few recordings out.
So, yeah, kick off your shoes and make yourself at home!

Aloha and welcome surferdude Mark... isn't Escondido inland?? There are guys that surf trestles who jam after with their ukuleles... or c'mon up to Manhattan Beach - same thing on Sat AM... I'm trying to work in the guitar thing with them - may have snagged one to go back to his guitar/slack key roots, but meantime, I bought an uke. Mika ele really is an old guy - but my kid is more than twice your age. I just started learning all this stuff and there are a wealth of slackers down in SD county. I'm looking forward to seeing you at a kanikapila very soon!! n |
