Found myself in an awkward situation the other
day at a music store. Told the clerk I wanted
to try the Koaloha tenor. I've never played
a "low G" (4th string) before and couldn't
figure out how to tune this thing. For a
person who is used to regular GCEA, could you
give me some easy ideas on tuning that 4th
string in relation to the other strings? I
usually use harmonics (ie. 7th harmonic on
3rd string = 12th harmonic on 4th, and so on).

I'm sure there's something obvious that I didn't
think of, but I was getting stressed out and gave up.

Compare the string 4, fret (5) to the open string 3. This is comparing unison notes C.

Use the harmonic at the 12th fret on the low 'g' to get the high 'g' octave. You can then fret the 5th position on the 'g' to get the 'c'. The rest is normal.

Once I finish tuning up a tenor, I usually go back and double check using the 5th position harmonic on the 'g' against the 7th position on the 'c'.
