Aloha, Fellow Taropatchers! My wife and I will be on the Big Island from April 26 to April 30, then on Maui from April 30 to May 4. We would love to find some live slack key music on either island. Also, she said that I could attend a workshop/lesson, etc. while she was shopping. I might just do some ukulele shopping of my own. Any suggestions? Mahalo, Ben Sterling

Aloha Ben, while on the Big Island you should seek out luthier Dennis Lake in Na'alehu. Check out pomahina.com. His ukes are definitely fine instruments. We have several. Also one of his fantastic guitars.
I see that you are from Austin. Do you by chance know our friend Bill Kirchen in Austin? Quite a musician. He picked up my Po Mahina uke and wailed on it, eventhough it was the first time he had ever picked one up.
Have a great time in Hawai'i! Julie |

Aloha, For shows, go to Mele.com. For lessons, on Big Island, contact John Keawe; on Maui, get ahold of Kevin Brown. Check out John's website for his regular gigs there; and of course Kona Bob knows what and where. On Maui, check out George Kahumoku's website for regular shows. Auntie Maria's listing is pretty complete. Have a wonderful time!! The search for a nice ukulele sounds like a fun pursuit! n |
