Aloha, fellow slackers.
This just might be my first real contribution to the forum, though not my first post!
I just dicovered a trick to playing harmonics (chimes) a few days ago that just blows me away.....after playing over 20 years, it just goes to show that time with the instrument practicing is always time well spent. Well, here goes:
You proabably all know that to play chimes effectively, you should:
1) Place your finger directly over the fret, not inbetween the frets (usually the 5th, 7th or 12th frets)
2) You should use a small surface area to touch the string, then pull off quickly after you pluck ( I use my pinky or ring finger to fret the note)
NOW: Here's the thing I just discovered!
If you pluck the string UPWARDS instead of sideways, ie. perpindicular to the top instead of parallel, you get a much clearer harmonic. I use my finger to actually hook under the string and pull up on it. This is particularly useful for those tough harmonics like the 5th fret, 1st and 2nd strings. It makes all the harmonics much louder, and more like the volume of the rest of the notes in your melody.
If you already knew this, sorry but I have to tell you this new technique really has me fired up. Please try it and tell me what you think!
