Twelve species of rare flies know for elaborate courtship and found only in Hawai’i are now protected under the ESA. Six are found on Oahu, three are on the Big Island, and there’s one each on Kaua’i, Moloka’i and Maui.
As many of you probably know, what is significant about the listing is their habitat is protected too.
No doubt there must be a link between their courtship and all that great Hawaiian music in the air.
Whatever it takes to protect habitat for the rest of us I'm all for it!! Teensie flies, seem to be doing better job in Hawaii than caribou, musk ox and wolves are faring in Alaska, however. If the Hawaiians can set aside habitat for their flies, why do their national legislators vote to open drilling in the arctic? Maybe because I'm the only one playing Hawaiianmujsic up here. See, there's another bad deal about being the only one.......better get a beer.
