Some of you own ukes with spruce tops. Some of you have tested and compared ukes with tops made of spruce versus non-spruce. My question: Is the spruce top worth it? Does it buy you more volume, longer ring, or better tone?
Some may swear their all-koa or all-mahogs sound better than spruce tops, but I'm interested in what people think of the spruce soundboard. I am considering it for my next tenor.

My advice would be to try an all koa and spruce top of the same brand and compare the two, head to head. Neither is 'better' than the other, but each instrument will have a particular tone and response.
Spruce tops will generally have quick response, clear/clean tone, and a bright sound. Koa tops are also bright, but the spruce will seem brighter, if played head to head. You also don't get as quick of a response with koa, but there's more complexity in the tone.
As for myself, I go back and forth between a koa and spruce top. It depends on what day of the week it is and what uke I have sitting around at the shop. My current favorites are between an all mango and an ebony side/back, spruce top that I built for my father. The two ukes are completely unlike each other, which makes it kind of funny that I switch between the two. |
