Just returned from taking several slack key classes from Patrick Landeza at the Augusta Heritage week in Elkins, WV. I've been playing guitar for many years, but am a complete newbie to slack key. Patrick's class was a ball, and the open G tuning opens up many opportunities for new sounds.

Welcome John. I've heard great things about Augusta Heritage week. I'm further north in NJ but at least on the right coast. Maybe one of these days. |

Welcome John, At the risk of having rutabegas or poi or taro plants or them funny little fish with the long names thrown at me for such heresy, open G is a great tuning for lots of other styles of playing as well, such as blues and some really neat slide stuff, lots of Leo Kottke and other gee-whiz players use it a lot. I still like slack key the most (there, everybody happy again?) becazue it is so relaxing to play and listne to, but you really should check out open G for its other possibilites as well. Heck, playing anything in any tuning will only mke you better in all your playing pursuits

The first one that I saw slack the strings was my Grandma from northern Sweden. Open G was found in 400 year old German lute tab. "Spanish Fandango", a tune from Mexico, is in open G. The standard tuning, EADGBE, is a compromise of DGDGBD and EBEG#BE. New tunings make for a "new" instrument. Welcome to Ki Ho'alu. Jus' press an' da blood preshah go way down. |

John, Whatever you do, don;t listen to anything Thumbs says! Just kidding, he's a great resource and a great player. If he says it's so, it's so. I play in about 5 tunings other than 'standard', in fact standard is the one i play least any more. As thumbs says, each tuning is like having a different instrument in your hands. Enjoy the ride. By the way, you can play Hawaiian music in any of those tunings (actually, there must be thirty or more hawaiian ntunings invented by the different players and families over the years), some sound better or ar easier to finger in certain tunings, but i think taropatch (open G) is the easiest of them all to learn in. |

Actually, "Spanish Fandango" is a 19th Century parlor guitar piece written by Henry Worrall. It is pretty obviously based on a Victorian idea of what Californio-Mexican folk music would sound like. Mississippi John Hurt called it "Spanish Flang Dang."
Some mainland folks call open G "Spanish Tuning" after this song. To make it even more confusing, some call standard tuning (E-A-D-G-B-E) "Spanish Tuning."
Anywho, glad you are enjoying the world of slack key. And you won't find a nicer internet community than TaroPatch.
cheers,
Mark

Thanks for the added history, Mark. A friend of mine told me that history is each succeeding generation knowing less an less of the past. |

... Aloha & welcome to the TP John. "Spanish Fandango" was the first slack song I ever learned taught to me from Keith Marzullo. A great lullaby song for keiki's. ~slkho |

Aloha, John. My husband, Paul, and I were also at Augusta with you. Patrick Landeza is one of the nicest, kindest people I have ever met. (Not to mention such a fine ki ho`alu player), We reserved a room at the Graceland Inn for next year already. Paul has been doing his lessons and recording them on a digital recorder to e-mail his "homework" to kumu Patrick. He is pretty good with Kahuku Slack Key, now. He's also playing Hi`ilawe while I try to sing it. So many different versions of Hi`ilawe....I love them all.
