Thanks Tommy! I felt the aloha.
It was awesome to have the Makaha Sons in New York celebrating their 30th anniversary. What an evening of music.
The Aloha Boys, Isaac Ho`opi`i, Irv Queja, Glen Hirabayashi and Ramon Camarillo, from Washington, DC opened with their smooth harmonies and nahenahe backyard style. These guys are so cool and sound so great. They were so nice to jam a couple of songs with me before they went out on stage.
Herb and Daniel played instrumentals off of their `Ukuleles in Paradise and Step 2 albums. Daniel sang Along for the Ride off of his album Simple as a Sunrise. These two guys have such great touch, timing and really blend well together. Oh, and Darin found out that both use the Yamaha MagicStomp Acoustic that Mark Nelson reviewed recently. Their tone was incredible. Thanks Daniel for a HUGE Taropatch.net plug! That was a pleasant surprise. Keep an eye out for Daniel, Herb & Keoki Kahumoku on tour in September-October.
The Makaha Sons - what can I say? 30 years of staying true to traditional Hawaiian music and still going. They have so many classic songs and arrangements that it must be tough to select which songs to perform in a single evening. Hilarious too.
It was an honor to play emcee for the evening. The crowd was great. The musicians were great. I know everyone backstage was floating on cloud 9. Mahalo to Leimomi Productions and Mark Nagtalon for making it all happen.
Here's a photo when everyone came out to sing a belated Happy Birthday to Uncle Jerome.

After I exited stage right, the show closed out with an energy filled Noho Pai pai. Phew! What a night! |

Howzit Andy,
Just talked with my brother today and he mentioned that his daughter/my niece (I think the only keiki in the halau) danced to "Na Pua Lei 'Ilima" with the Makaha Sons at the concert. Our whole family is thrilled, especially my Dad, who's a big Makaha Sons fan, and especially loves their version of "Na Pua Lei 'Ilima."
My brother also mentioned that he met you at the concert. I told him, "Andy knows everybody!" He said you did a great job as M.C. Congrats!
Aloha,
Doug |

Doug,
Meant to shoot you an email but you beat me. So here it goes for all to see.
You'd mentioned that your brother and his family were in NJ. I'm so glad that he introduced himself. And how cool to have your niece dancing up their with Makaha Sons. She did great! She's what, 10-years old? Stole the show.
Hope to catch up with you again. I see your photos jamming with everyone. You must be a pro. How's your Ku`u Home O Kahalu`u? |

Hi Andy,
Great to hear from you. Yeah, the keiki always steal the show, especially if she's the only one!
You've noticed I've been attending as many of the kanikapila's and Open Mics as I can here in the Bay Area. In fact just came back from the Vacaville kani today. I'm learning a lot, meeting many great and talented folks, and even getting my sons involved.
My "Ku'u Home 'O Kahalu'u" is still a work in progress, but I've gotten up enough guts to actually play and sing it solo at several open mics. Yikes! In fact, I force myself to sing at least one song at every open mic now. Gotta start with baby steps, and the only way to learn is to do it I guess. As you know, singing adds a whole new dimension to slack key and it's fun to make up your own arrangements.
Let us know the next time you're visiting the Bay Area and we'll gather the gang to kani with you. We have a great group of folks here.
Aloha,
Doug |
