Hi gang, "scuse the typos, I'm wearing a bandage to save a cracked nail.
Got Makana's new CD "Koi Au" the other day, and I want to recommend it to you. This is definitely NOT a CD for tradtionalists. Makana pushes the art form into what is "traditionally" not slack key territory. Probably more accurately called "slack key fusion." But his technique is great, and what he does is good and interesting. Worth the coswt of the CD. Fans of early HAPA will definitely like this CD.
That said, I don't think this is a "great" album. After 4 plays, I didn't hear a cut that I just had to replay. Of course, this is personal taste. My real critique of the album is that it has very little nuance and subtelty, and some cuts are a bit over produced. A better "editor" could have made this an incredible album.
NOW -- if you want to hear a GREAT CD (but not Hawaiian) check out "Intimo" by Yolanda Aranda (singer) and Enrique Coria (guitar) on Dave Grisman's Acustic Disk label. Songs from throughout Latin America, heavy on Mex. and Arg. If you don't know Spanish, follow the singing with the translations -- this lady does stuff with her voice that I haven't heard from some name brand opera singers. And the guitar playing -- I would trade some parts of my body to be able to play as good as that. After over a dozern listens, I still want to listen to it again and again. Best album I've picked up in months.
