I need to get some music together for a friend’s wedding and would like to present her with a CD of Hawaiian Love Songs. I will only be using songs that I can legally purchase and download as I don’t believe in ripping off artists. Any suggestions would be appreciated. A list of your favorites would be great and if you have song name and artist’s name it would be better. English or Hawaiian lyrics are both fine. My Wife’s first response was Elvis so I guess any appropriate songs will work.

Thank You

Philip The only thing worse than my playing is my singing.

Seems as I recall previous discussion(s) of songs for weddings.

Try a search with the keywords "wedding reception" on this site.

There is also a CD titled "Hawaiian Love Songs" by George Kahumoku
that has a number of popular songs of this nature! (Available from
mele.com).

The most-requested songs I get from my radio show listeners, are love songs. Here are a few titles you can look for (not sure if you'll find downloadable versions):

Ei Nei
Waiulu
Ho`onanea
Mi Nei
Pua Ahihi

And for a wedding, the beautful "Lei Aloha, Lei Makamae" ("Forevermore") for sure.

Side note -- "Ke Kali Nei Au" (The Hawaiian Wedding Song) is actually a song about the engagement, not the wedding. Just learned that from a musician friend here on Kaua`i...

Oh, and the ladies of Na Leo released "Love Is..." -- filled with songs specifically for weddings/receptions:

I just played a wedding today and couple involved were fans of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. The mothers processional was "In This Life". Then the wedding party marched in to "White Sandy Beach" and the bride and her dad walked down the aisle to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", also Iz style. Then after the ceremony they marched back down the aisle to "Henehene Ko Aka".
More contemporary suggestions for love songs:
E Ho'i I Ka Pili (Keali'i Reichel)
Kawaipunahele (Keali'i Reichel)
Kapilina (Sean Na'auao)
Church in an Old Hawaiian Town (Bruddah Waltah)
Pua Hone (I like Herb Ohta Jr. version)
Kawailehuaa'alakahonua (John Cruz)
Spend My Life (Kanalo)

When I perform at our local resort, we are frequently asked to dedicate a song to folks celebrating marriage, anniversaries, etc. "Ke Kali Nei Au" is always a struggle for me to sing, mostly because I don't care for the song. Instead we now do Aunty Irmgard Aluli's beautiful "E Maliu Mai". Huapala notes that it was composed in 1950 as an alternative to Ke Kali Nei Au.
