Mahalo nui Kevin and Reid! And thanks for the post Kevin! It was a very exciting night. It's funny, I perform quite regularly, usually with a group, and have no difficulty getting on stage and putting the music out there... But something about this particular venue, the Hana Song Contest, where you are up there alone, under a big giant magnifying glass for all to see and hear...It's a bit nerve-wracking! I felt good this year, though. I went in with a new strategy and worked up my own arrangements of the two songs which meant I didn't have to think too much about the playing part. That gave me the freedom to put more feeling into the lyrics and my vocals. All-in-all in was a thrilling experience. Pretty lavish prizes too: $2000.00 plus the CD recording contract! Wow.
The Hana Song Contest is privately sponsored by one of Hana's part-time residents. His intention is to bring folks back around to more traditional style Hawaiian music (as opposed to the reggae-tinged, pop, rock flavored stuff). It's quite an event here, open to the public and free of charge. Usually happens this time every year. So, if you're ever in Hana during the second week of August -- you know where to go to hear the real grass-roots music.
Mahalo, again, Kevin for helping me share my happy news.

P.S. Kevin -- remember when we were on Moloka'i last May ? ... I played you the very beginnings of my arrangement for Nani Ko'olau? What a great time that was. Hope we can go back there soon! |

Congratulations, Duke!
We tried to attend the songfest about 3-4 years ago, but the whole danged thing got rained out. Kids were actually skim boarding in the ballpark "lake"! We still had fun -- drove all over town with our Hana friend (Leokane Pryor) finding the families/groups who had prepared food for the event, and bought up enough to feed us all for the day.
Which label is doing the album for you??? |

Mahalo Auntie!!
Next time I see Leokane I'll mention you to him! Now there's a guy with a great falsetto, huh?
Anyway, The sponsor of the Hana Song Festival is in the process of building a studio here in Hana. He recently expressed disappointment that the previous winners have yet to produce any recorded music and so I guess he decided to take the bull by the horns. After the recording process, I'm not quite sure what happens. This is all VERY new for me. And very exciting!

Aloha, Duke!
Ho'omaika'i! Congratulations on your first prize and your recording contract! Your successive placings each year are significant, too. Your talent and persistence are bearing fruit, it's wonderful to see. Mahalo, Kevin, for spilling the beans ;-)
