Aloha Taro Patch Ohana!
Braddah Don Kaulia here!,
For the Labor Day Weekend, this year's Slack Key Festival on the Big Island will be at the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort formerly known as the Kona Surf Hotel on Sunday, September 3, 2006 from Noon - pau.
I did some legwork for Milton Lau here on the Westside of the Big Island, Brittni Paiva did for Hilo Side and Jody Brotman for the Kohala & Waimea Side.
I'll be hosting a Jam Session at Border's Music in Kona on Saturday, September 2 from 4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. to promo most of the artists lined-up for Sunday's festival. Milton tells me that he already released Slack Key Grandmaster Ledward Kaapana's newest album along with Paul Tagioka's "Here, There and Everywhere" slack key CD. Hopefully the new CD - "Hawaiian Slack Key Kings" will be out by this weekend in time for the festival in Kona. 15 Slack Kings are featured on the album.
After Border's we will be having a jam session at Huggo's on da Rocks from 7:00pm - 11:00pm.
So if you are on the island for the Labor Day Weekend there is ALOT to DO!!! ...Kona Canoe Regattas, Motorcycle Runs Islandwide, Waimea Cowboy Rodeo ... all day. Come spend the Saturday Evening with us at Borders Music and Huggos On The Rocks then on Sunday enjoy a day of Slack Key Music.
You can log onto: www.KonaWeb.com to find out what is in store for Labor Day Weekend Events on the Big Island.
See you all at the jam!

Howzit Andy!
Well, I'm doing the same thing I did at the Blue Marlins on Maui. This time around I have enough time to make it happen for my colleagues in Slack Key for a place to jam. Huggo's on the Rocks is my regular gig; people from all over the world hang out and even jam with me there. My buddy Leon from New Zealand is an awesome guitarist who will share the stage with me at the Slack Key Festival. Last week we had Katcha Fire from New Zealand and brother Fiji doing stuff with me and Leon...pretty cool jam. Then we have Rock Artist Buddy Blaze from NIN hanging out with us since he moved here this summer and then Prisilla and Lisa Presley inhouse. So Huggo's on the Rocks is the place to be anytime you come to Kona.
Me and the family live here in Kona permanently now. Although we miss Maui we kind of enjoy the Big Island and it's prestine beauty and lots to do...fish, dive, hunt, shop and plenty of slack key time. My day job keeps me busy. When you come to the Big Island you will notice the new highways, hotel and housing developments. A very big boom here on the island.
Take care Andy.

Aloha Reid & Sarah!
Ah Shucks...maybe next time you both come to the Big Island. I finally have the time to get the gang to jam before and after the festival. Huggo's is the top spot on the Big Island. I was kind a lucky when Leon saw me perform. Good to here from good friends from across the way. Aloha to you both.

Howzit Braddah Kevin!
Thanks for the message. How you? I see you and Ikaika touring all around! Awesome!
I busy making roads day time but got lucky landing a steady gig at Huggo's on the Rocks in Kona right across the street from Lulu's.
Next time you come Kona call my cell 960-4656.
I teaching slack key for Music Exchange in Kona...only good fun. I emphasize on 'memory' instead of sight reading tabs.
The wife is good and happy. The girl is recording with Aaron Kimura of Keahiwai. The boy...he works at Grace Pacific too.
Thanks for the message Bruddah Kevin...if it wasn't for you hooking me up in 1998 Bankoh Slack Key Festival Lahaina with Milton Lau I wouldn't be doing these Slack Key Events. I never will forget Bruddah Kevin, Big Time Mahalo & Thankyou, Don
My aloha to your wife and family, & Bruddah Sheldon too!
A hui hou!

Aloha, "Bruddah" Don So nice to see your ohana's doing well. Can't wait for the girl's cd to come out. I will give you a call when we come to the big island. The waihee gang came back from a trip to molokai awhile back, we spent 3 day's at Puu O Hoku ranch. Norman and his wife set the whole event up and we all went there for a big kanikapila. Bruddah Ivan Hoopii, Duke, Bob, Sheldon, Norman, a few other slack key players from molokai, someone from Virginia heard about the session and found his way to the ranch. Everybody had a wonderful time and we're planning a trip to Laupahoehoe, Dwight Tokumoto wanted to host us at his place, when we come I'll be sure to let you know ahead of time. It's a way to connect with other slacker's around the islands, Hopefully we can bring them out of the woodworks.
Just think it all started when we all gathered at the Bailey House, ( along with sarah and reid.) We hav'nt been to waihee for awhile but after Ikaika and I get back, We'll start it up again. I was talking to kahu anakalea he said there going to do some major changes on the church grounds and once they start we won't be able to use the area because of the heavy equipment and materials around the area. It won't be for awhile I just talk with him the other day, so if by chance you might be on Maui around the 16 of september stop by, we should be back home by then, have a great concert!

Aloha Don and Kevin,
How nice for both of you that you have so much good stuff going on - and your kids, too. Wow! I hope it keeps on keeping on...(Including the touring, Kevin - you and the ohana are getting as well known on the mainland as in the Islands).
Yeah, guys, it *did* all start at the Bailey House. How many years ago was that? 10-12? Great times. Don, I remember you were a fireman then, right? Ikaika was about 14 then and Ka`ena was a junior in HS. That's where we met, and made, so many good friends. And learned.
I hope Waihe`e does start up again. It took up where the Bailey House left off. The last 2 times there were awesome, and with so many new people joining up - even from the other islands. You know, we have gotten email from that amazing young`ukulele player, Jared, and I have learned plenty from him. Then there was Atta, who stunned us, and Jeri's steel playing...and I could go on and on.
BTW, Kevin, didn't you retire or something :-)?? You are working harder than ever and we hope you are enjoying every second of it.
me ke aloha pumehana,
Reid (and Sarah, who has a rotator cuff problem, and in PT trying to heal. Sorta cuts down on the time she can play :-( |

Don, couldn't you get your promoter, or whoever, to get you gigs just a little farther North? Spring is lovely in New England - especially May, and NYC is a blast.
Give it a shot.

Hey Don! I almost missed this string! I can promise that at least one TaroPatcher will be at your events: ME! Also I will let everyone know at the kanikapila we have up here at Sam's Uke Gallery on Wednesday night, and I will make sure that the ukulele group in Keauhou knows about it too. It's great to see you doing more music these days! I have been busy up mauka, getting 18 more basses ready to take to Cerritos (Ukulele Festival in October). I have also been playing a little with Chris Yeaton and Buddy Fo. See you guys on Saturday! Aloha, -Konabob |

Hi Bob and Cat the Glass,
Well, fun and hot sun is all I can say.
Music Exchange gave away a free Martin Guitar. I now teach slack key and ukulele at Kona's Music Exchange. Leon will be teaching guitar lessons. We have been fortunate to be sponsored by this music store and by Martin Guitars.
We had a nice crowd at Huggo's after the concert.
Next year will be great when Music Exchange and I host a workshop on a Friday evening and all day Saturday then do a jam at the concert Sunday.
My plate for music is full now that I'm teaching.
Leon and myself will be in the studios for Fiji's newest 'Hawaiian' CD project.
After hearing Leon and me at the concert, Milton wants to finish my long awaited CD project for 2008 featuring the new slack key stylings we have.
So, I take one day at a time to slowly accomplish my music mission not to mention my family committments and my 'day' job. Whew!
You guys ever visit Kona come by at Huggo's and experience the 'aloha' Leon and I put out.
Thanks, Don
