I have always wondered what guitars Keola Beamer mainly uses on his albums. I tried looking all over the Internet but could not find any info. Does anybody here know?

Hi Skinny,
He almost exclusively plays Steve Grimes double puka guitars, both steel and nylon. I'm sure he has a large stable of guitars, but those are the ones most often seen in his hands. www.grimesguitars.com

Most good luthiers do charge a bundle for a guitar, and Grimes is no different. The sound Keola gets from them is amazing, with the addition of various processors that create his "dream guitar" sound.
I can't afford one either.

Mark,
I saw Keola play a student's guitar in a workshop and he sure sounded sweet. And during a lesson Ozzie took a real beater that I had bought for $25 at the Aloha Stadium Flea Mrkt and sound pretty good - amazing 'cause that was a real junker I bought just to play for a couple of weeks and get rid of when I flew back to CA. Don't get duped into that old "if I only had a great guitar" thing.
If you play nylon/classical - you might want to check out the guitars made by Kenny Hill. Some of them have exceptionally beautiful tones and are player friendly and they won't destroy your pocket book like a Grimes. |

And don't forget the "miles of technique" (to quote Mark) that Keola has. He is simply a superb musician. He could make a fleamarket junker sound good.

Sarah is right on the money here. Keola is a superb musician. As such, he's able to pick up anything that's in tune, and sound like Keola.
The quality of his Grimes guitars serve to highlight some subtlties that something lesser may not be able to bring out.
I am biased however. Keola can make a guitar sound good by dropping it.

I'm very biased towards Pimental Sons of Albuquerque. If you happen to be in the area, call them ahead of time and they'll have some guitars for you to try out. After hearing their better guitars (not the cheap entry level) I gave up on my desire to buy a Grimes and bought one of theirs. Never regreted it yet.
For much cheaper guitars, though, I still haven't heard better than Kenny Hill. |

| My Dad used to say that if you can make a cheapr instrument sound good, you deserve a better one. It's also good to have a "camping" guitar around. |

| Leave your checkbook at home. Many of the top luthier's bring their good stuff and let you try it out. Lots of other stuff for sale, too. A bit of a problem if your play nylon string and alternate tunings. Pretty good workshops, too. It is an every other year thing and, if you can control your desires, worth going to at least once. |
