As I get older I find my attention span gets shorter or memory gets worse -- I can’t remember which. In any case, I find it difficult to listen to an entire album of one artist at one sitting. If there is too much of the same, I start skipping songs. I keep listening not only for the beauty and musicianship of the artist, but for something a little different in each song. If you are like me, even a little bit, than you WILL be able to listen to all of Chris Yeaton’s new CD release, “Ho’o Pa’a (The Stand): Slack Key & American Fingerstyle Guitar”.

This complete album is – simply put -- a real keeper. Chris will succeed in keeping your interest from the first song to the last. His guitar playing skills are spot on. His compositions captivate. His selection of songs showcases the capabilities of the guitar in the hands of a true guitar lover. He reflects the talents of his notable teachers and mentors. His version of Keola Beamer’s “Puka Pants” honors the remarkable talents of the composer and the keen abilities of the exceptional student to add to the piece in personal and touching ways.

Those of you that are looking for ways to stretch the boundaries of the symphony of sounds that you can coax out of a guitar will well appreciate the percussive elements that Chris weaves into his original compositions. Fans of Michael Hedges and Peppino D’Agostino will hear those influences in some of Chris’s compositions.

Chris’s version of Makee ‘Ailana will have you imagining young lovers on the old (long gone) foot bridge in Kapiolani Park to the island named after Captain James Makee.

“The Stand” was on Chris’s website with two different endings. The one voted on by the most visitors was used in this recording. I’ll let you find out on your own if ending A or B was the right choice. This is an exceptional song, well composed and well crafted.

There are so many good songs. I’ll let you take the time to discover them on your own. I am sure you will come to a similar conclusion – this will remain in your car’s CD player for a long time and you will stop listening to talk radio.
