Hey Fran, did they have "Manapua"? Im glad you and lynn were still able to enjoy the day with friends. Thanks again for playing for Paul's mom, the family wanted to say thank you. One question, who got to the resturant first???

No manapua, uncle, but we're getting all the opinions of all the local connoisseurs - we found a couple in Kailua but we've been told to head for Honolulu and Chinatown.

And (drat) Lynnie got there about 15 minutes before I did. I was practicing my "What can I say" shrug all the way, and didn't get to use it.

Aloha, Cathe,

It's musical madness around here, you know? Besides Led on Saturday and Sunday, Mike Ka`awa on Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday, we also have Ray Sowders on Sunday and Tuesday, Herb Jr. solo on Sunday and Monday, Herb Jr. and David on Wednesday and Friday, Auntie Genoa Keawe on Thursday, Jerry Santos with Haunani Apoliona on Saturday, Mihana Aluli Souza on Thursday in Chinatown, Pilioha on Wednesday, Jeff Peterson a couple days a week, and Kuo, Pahinui, and Mahi on Sunday.

At Chai's Island Bistro alone, we have the Brothers Caz, Nathan Aweau, Sista Robi Kahakalau and Sean Na`auao, Makaha Sons, Makana, Jerry Santos and Friends, Maunalua, and Hapa.

I know there are lots of other artists that I would love to see but I don't (so far) know their work - I'll learn about them later and slap my head because I missed them playing for free at a beach bar or hotel lounge.

Check these links: http://www.chaisislandbistro.com/entertainment.html and http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/current/en/tgifcal just to get an idea.

Then add to that the opportunities to jam with folks, and those airline tickets start to look like a real bargain. Especially if you're on the Aloha Airlines mailing list and they start sending you stuff like $129 seats around the beginning of November!!

Aaawwwright, just back from a very special interlude with the one and only Ivan Ho`opi`i (at least I hope there's not more than one <grin>). Ivan invited me over for a lunch-time kanikapila, and it was sure fun to see the man work the strings up close. Lots of good stories, too.

Thanks for the fun, Ivan!

Awesome, Fran! Looks like you are one busy buggah island hopping (and having some great music moments with some fine musicians!).
You are having way too much fun, as usual. Is Ivan open to having other folks jam with him from time to time? Does he go to Kevin's in Waihe'e on occasion? Mahalo for the links, too!

Hey Fran, if you see George, Martin, and Aaron, give them a big ALOHA from Kurt here in Bend Oregon. They have been a regular at our annual charity luau. Such a pleasure to have here year after year.

One other thing...are your fingers bleeding yet? hehe. Sounds like you are getting sssooo many opportunities to play. Good for you!

ps: I hear they have wonderful beaches over there too.

What? You mean high "E" is the TOP string. No way dude! That changes everything!

Maggie, we're not hopping yet, Ivan lives and works here on O`ahu. His visit to the Waihe`e jam was an island hop for him. His ID here on Taropatch is "shakabrah" so you can shoot him an email. Since he told me he would have been jamming through his lunch even without company, my guess is that he's up for a kanikapila most of the time.

Kurt, if we get to see "the guys" I'll sure pass along your aloha. I've got pretty good dents in my fingers but no bleeding yet. And funny you should mention beaches, we're about a one minute walk from Kailua Beach, surely one of the most gorgeous stretches of sand and surf in the world. We've been wearing out the path down to it <grin>.

Mahalo, Fran for the clarification. One more reason to hang out on Oahu. Lotsa kanikapila and music action for sure! When do you have time to go to the beach, man? Ha! - Mags

Ok, back from an idyllic interlude on Maui with Ohana Brown - words simply cannot express. Uncle Kevin met us at the airport, took us out to the west end where we enjoyed a fabulous, and totally sold out to the max, show by Uncle George Kahumoku, Jr. and the Flying Fingers from Kalapana, Mr. Ledward Ka`apana. Uncle George did such a wonderful job of emceeing and getting the packed crowd into the mood, I was in awe. The master storyteller had them in the palm of his hand, and his playing was so moving and powerful that he carried the audience along as only a true artist can. His nephew Lopaka danced a story of Pele that Uncle George arranged as a stirring celebration.

Ledward took the stage with the combination of humor and virtuosity that only he can convey. He gave us "Kolomona Slack Key," "Slack Key Lullaby," "Opihi Moemoe" and "Ku`u Ipo Onaona" among others. Naturally, being Led, he added new twists and turns to every tune. Kevin and I were laughing out loud at some of the harmonic and rhythmic ideas spicing up the beloved tunes. The large and appreciative crowd seemed to spur Led on, he had to admit that he was having as much fun as the audience. The show wrapped up with a jam including Uncle George, Led, and "Da Ukulele Boyz."

Thursday was another special one. Maui radio station KNUI holds a monthly broadcast under the monkey pod tree in Wailuku, and we were there. Local duo, Mele Aloha sang and played, local folks sat under the shade of the magnificent tree, and dancers joined in to add that extra special touch. We even had a special guest from Kaleponi, Faith Thompson Aiko, a local lady who's moved to Santa Rosa but was visiting Maui. Her daughter danced while mom sang and played `ukulele. Awesome talent demonstrated by both. And, naturally, being with Kevin and Joleen Brown, we met everyone in the crowd, all the performers, and the whole technical crew.

To cap the evening, we headed out to the Royal Lahaina Lu`au, where Ikaika Brown leads the band every night. He has recruited Uncle Kevin as a substitute guitar player, and I gotta say this was by far the best lu`au band I've ever seen and heard. The choice of songs, the quality of the dancers, the sound system, all combined to make this a very enjoyable show.

We're back on O`ahu with another set of golden memories, thanks to our cherished friends.

Fran,

Thanks for the wonderful descriptions. You write so beautifully about such beautiful experiences. Reading them really brightens up chilly New England afternoons here in Konekikuka :-)

I've been pretty restrained in my shopping trips, but I had to pay a visit to "Music Guy Mike" to see some of his amazing selection of `ukuleles. Mike maintains an Ebay store http://stores.ebay.com/Musicguymics-Room and it's a virtual drool-fest - but his real world `ukulele room is even more stimulating. He has arrangements with the production shops and with many of the small custom builders as well. He also handles Kala laminated (really cute) instruments and some other builders from the far east. I now have a bad case of "I gotta have it" over a couple of his instruments. I wonder what Lynnie will say <grin>?
