Iz Over the Rainbow: A Hawaiian Tribute Israel Kamakawiwo'ole Various Artists Original Release Date: August 29, 2006 Label: Big Eye Music ASIN: B000GY72OC
I bought this CD from amazon.com, which was billed as a tribute to Israel Kamakawiwo`ole. Oh my....I am so ashamed I bought it. I got it from Amazon.com, who I thought only did business in a pono fashion. There is nothing pono about whoever perpetrated this travesty. Here is my review which is posted on amazon.com:
This CD is horrible! Whoever the mystery person(s) are, they need to never think of making a CD again. This DVD is some Japanese hack trying to sing Iz sons. Boy was I ever duped. I thought this was officially sanctioned by the Kamakawiwo`ole family, but it is not. It is not sanctioned by Mountain Apple Records. The Kamakawiwo`ole family gets nothing from this. The songwriters get nothing from this. The people who buy it get nothing but ripped off. For instance, the beautiful song Kaleohano, which was written by Louis "Moon" Kauakahi. It is not only hacked up here, but the CD says it was written by "unknown", which means Moon is getting nothing out of this. Oh my goodness, if you heard how they factured "Henehene Kou Aka". They didn't even try to learn the Hawaiian words and therefore just mumbled a bunch of noise. Please do not waste your money on this. This is not a tribute to Iz, it is a travesty. I gave it one star, because I cannot put zero stars. Please do not buy this. Please write to the publisher and tell them they should go to jail.
Please do not buy this -- when I wrote to amazon to complain about the rip off regarding royalties, etc., I got back a standard form e-mail, obviously written by someone at a customer service center in India or such. Amazon continues to peddle this.
You can listen to samples on Amazon now. When I bought it, no music samples were available. Had I been able to listen to it, I would not have dreamed of buying it. It makes me want to cry, because I feel I have contributed to the proper people not getting their due.

Sorry you didn't see Auntie Maria's post on this earlier. Illegal "IZ" CD
Never had such a harsh review before but given that it is a "completely unauthorized and illegal recording" - this post will remain.
Ps. Is it just me or did they misspell "Hawaiian" on the cover? |

Aloha Mr. Admin, was your question regarding the okina in Hawai'i? If I remember correctly I heard from Auntie Nona Beamer that the word "Hawaiian" does NOT include the okina. My memory may be wrong, as I'm getting on in years, but I thought maybe if you were referring to that okina, we should get someone who is an expert to weigh in on this so we can all be correct.

IMHO, Amazon is pretty much the polar oposite of pono.
Yes, I do biz with them -- it's an exposure thing. But I lose money everytime I sell a CD through Amazon.com. Plus they have links where you can download songs from one of my albums -- one for which I have never rec'd a penny. I tried to get them to take down the downlaods, but could find a way througn the maze to reach an actual person.
With that in mind, I'd sugggest dealing with mele.com or the artists themselves via their websites or off the stage.
Sorry you got burned.

Aloha, Mark. I am very sorry you are getting ripped off, too. Your are right -- you cannot find a real person to talk to at Amazon.com. I normally buy all da kine music from Aunty Maria. I love her web site and all the info and music samples, etc. The only place I found this so-called tribute was on Amazon, so I bought it. You are absolutely right, though. I shall never buy da kine from anyone other than Aunty Maria. Not only does she have the right selection, but she is very pono, and that is important to me. |

I heard samples on Amazon.com and I am amazed that someone would go to any length to sell someone else's CD in either words, use their name and pass it on. DON'T BUY this CD! |

It's too late. I put it on my wish list and received it for Christmas this year. I saw it on amazon and although some of the words were pronounced wrong, I didn't think it was that bad. Now, however, I have just discovered about the unauthorization and all that, because of your reviews. Now I see why you think it is so bad. But I think the music is pretty good. That's just what I think... |

The only other negative thing I would say is that if I met the singer who put this out, I'd say, "Aloha, le'me teach you some Hawaiian. I don't think you pronounced some of your words right." |

I'm not familiar with the CD in question, but the sentiment of criticism seems to be reserved for the "chosen few" When I expressed a criticism I was 'shot down in Flames' and driven from the forum. How come is it because in Haole or just not American ?

The youtube thing you pointed out was not warning us of a commercial ripoff by poor musicians. Wanda's was. There is a difference and your take on it might just be because of cultural differences. Maybe you do things differently in England. I don't know. I have at least 6 brits and Irish and Scots on my favorites phone book so I really don't quite know where you are com ing from. Don't take things so personal and smile more . It no goin broke you face. |
