Can anyone help me with the meaning of "He Punahele" (arr. Keola)? I think Punahele (as in Kane's song) means something like "favored one". How does "He" change the meaning? Thanks Bob

Aloha mai e Bob,
"He" corresponds to the English indefinite article "a" or "an". The difference is "A Favorite/Favored One" vs "Favorite/Favored One". In these specific song titles, as I understand them in their context, "He Punahele" refers to the person being sung about/to in the lyrics, while "Punahele" refers to the melody (there are no lyrics) being a favorite of Uncle Ray's.

I believe the favored one in this case is a baby. Keola teaches us to play it as the sound of a sleeping baby breathing.
Talk about nahenahe!

A Hawaiian Waltz. This song, written by Albert Nahale'a, has become a popular Island favorite. You often hear it being dedicated to loved ones over the radio and even at weddings or a baby's lu'au.
