I never used tabs before i studied with Ozzie Kotani, I always used standard notation or used my ears. The thing is that Ozzie has so many good songs tabbed out that I have never heard before and don't have recordings of, so in lessons I find it is best to try to and absorb as much of the musical information as and then use the tabs to refresh my memory at home when I am practicing.
Tabs are definitely far from perfect at conveying a song, but they are not that bad when you have somewhat of an idea of how the song goes. |

One vrey real advantage to tab is the fret numbers don't change. If you play from standard sheet music, you move all the notes when you change tunings- a fact of life in slack key. Music notation is good, if you only use one tuning. Retuning can give you notes you didn't have before, or take some away. But the ones that didn't come or go are in new locations. Tab is better for learning with multiple tunings. The 4th fret is always the 4th fret. Paul |

Properly written tablature conveys everything that sheet music does in addition to the correct fingering to play the transcribed piece on a guitar. The problem is that there is a lot of tab out there that is not written properly and hence fails to convey such critical information as timing and dynamics. |

Maybe this should be moved to talk story... I thought Andy had locked this awhile ago!
Tabs don't blow, but also they are not my "final answer" Tab cannot convey feel ...and many of the workshop tabs have imperfections...especially in rhythmic aspects.... They are offered in the spirit of Aloha, and are not done as "Ready to Publish"...
The first thing I write in when presented with an Ozzie--or any rough tab,--is RHYTHM... either there, or from the best recorded version I have. Ozzie has questioned this, but I do it so I have a stronger imprint to take home.
It's critical to better musical interpretation, and execution on guitar. Often, in his workshop tabs (not true for his book--which is "spot-on"), the last 16ths, (or pick-ups, grace-notes/ anticipations), which would traditionally be written in the END of the measure, are written in the beginning of the next measure...Indeed, they really do connect and belong with the next idea in the phrase...but mathmatically, they belong in the preceding measure... Once you've experienced a few, you start to make pretty good guesses...
And once you get the idea in your fingers, ears, and mind, you're off to the races. Indeed, it's not "Biblical" notation! But it's Biblically engraved Gold. They are a Rosetta Stone to many of us lost in the wilderness... I keep 'em in the vault.
Perfect of not, I'll take Ozzie's commandments down the hill. "Hey look everyone, I've got these 15 Commandments.... woops... Hey look everyone, I've got these 10 Commandments..." Of course, they're in the new Latin.

The only real problem with tabs is it's easy to let yourself depend on them, to the extent that you don't allow yourself to grow away from them. The purpose of any teacher is to bring the student to the point where the teacher becomes obsolete. Math, science, guitar-whatever. The purpose of tabs should be no different in that respect. Eventually your ears should take over.As you become better aquainted with the fingerboard, this will happen.(My spelling, math and english teachers aren't obsolete yet.Nor are the tabs, completely obsolete.) I think there are many different reasons why people play music, and just as many different goals. I see nothing wrong in someone wanting to play the music they enjoy but wanting to use notation/TAB and others people's arrangements. Just because it is slack key and so many people play without notation doesn't mean that using notation is wrong. It all depends what your goal is in playing, and that is one of the places where it is very individually determined. |
