Does anyone know anything about Lono? I have one of his CD's "Old Style" and I am quite impressed with his playing and his voice, as well. It is a very soulful voice and he seems to play the old songs with great respect and humility. I have really not heard much about him, especially as a ki ho`alu virtuoso. Not so much publicity.Where is he from? Does he play live in the islands, so that maybe I would have a chance to hear him live when I come to the islands?

Mahalo.

Lono is one of my favorite contemporary Hawaiian musicians. I ran into him at Hotel Moloka`i last summer and got a chance to hang out, talk story, and jam a bit. I got the impression that after pursuing more commercial venues and styles he's happily come to the conclusion that a return to Moloka`i and playing in the old style is where he wants to be. I encourage everyone to check out his "Old Style" CD's they are exactly as Wanda describes them. By the way--he plays left handed which can make "reading" his hands during a jam quite task.

His third "Old Style" disc should be out before long; his mother was at our Hawaiian events in Kalama WA this past summer, and she let us hear a CD with five of the songs from it - really good material! We played it over the p.a. between bands, and people were asking us about it all day. He's really done his homework and research, and is tapping deep into his family's roots.
