Aloha E Kevin,
When we were at Lark Camp, you changed the tuning on my Rickenbacker to encourage me to try something new. But over time the strings all went whacky and I have no idea how you tuned it. Do you remember? I started off with TaroPatch, as that's how my regular guitar is tuned. I'm ashamed to say that I haven't taken it out of its case until now, and time and travel have taken a toll on the poor old thing.
Remembering fondly our week at Lark...
Julie

Aloha, Julie Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, didn't have a chance to get to a computer. The tuning i left on your steel is a C6 tuning. Starting from the bass string and working your way up is.
C E G A C E.... Sorry Julie, looking forward to Lark Camp again, this time i promise, I won't touch your steel guitar. :) I'll give you a call.
Me Ke Aloha Kevin.... please give Larry my aloha! Happy Thanksgiving to you and the Taropatch Ohana.

Hey Julie -
Let's hope some of Kevin's mana rubbed off, eh?
I've been playing C6th for about a year now. It makes a ton of sense once you get used to it. Just stay off those 6th chords, or Fred Lunt will cringe!
With a couple of key twists, you can go to the A6 tuning that Jeri Valdriz uses:
C# E F# A C# E
This one may feel more familiar cuz the top three strings are the same as Taropatch or High G, just up a whole step. It's also very close to the G6th that Ken Emerson uses. -- major triad on top, minor triad on strings 2, 3 & 4.
Don't forget, Kevin's gonna be at AMC in February. So's Sonny Lim, who's a terrific steel player.
Happy slidin'! |

Mark - The A tuning you list above is what Jerry Byrd used for "How'd Ya Do". I got the information from DeWitt Scott (of Scotty's Guitar in St.Louis). You can hear on the 'outro' at the end, when he uses the natural harmonics to end the piece. When are you coming up to Seattle next? |

Aha! Another piece of the puzzle. Can't say I've done anything with A6 other than tune into it and scratch my head a few times -- I'm still a total baby at the whole concept of steel. More fun than a barrel of monkees on ice skates, tho'
I've got workshops at Dusty String the weekend of January 20 & 21.
cheers,

Ah Kevin, I was just thinking that I would bring ALL my instruments up to Lark Camp, and you could tweak all of them, giving me at least 3 years of experimentation! Just be sure to leave some of your mana on each of them.
Mark, I've seen Jeri up close in action on his Rickenbacher fry pan steel, that's one sweet instrument. So he uses A6? Sure wish I could get a hold of his CD, but I was told it's only sold in Japan...
OK, I'm reading up on music theory now because I need to fill in the gaps, and there are quite a few of them.
We went to see the band Island Breeze in Soquel tonight, and Bill Leff was playing a double 8 string Fender. I was so happy to hear that wonderful steel sound again, after a long dry spell, that it just made my whole weekend perfect.
Gotta go practice now, Julie

Well, Jeri's e-mail address has A6 in it!
Julie, I'll send you his contact info. I'll bet you can order it directly from him. It's a sweet CD.
I don't feel comfortable posting his address here -- after all, the guy's a family court judge. Might be some disgruntled plaintiffs outh there.
cheers,

Hey, Mark! I have been talking with DeWitt Scott, of Scotty's music in St. Louis about How'd Ya Do. He was a protoge of Jerry Byrd, and he is sending me tab for what he learned from Jerry when he visited him in Hawaii several years ago. Jerry used his B tuning on a single 8. The top 5 strings are like an A9 chord, so he could play in A on those strings, which are all that are used for the tune (hence the natural chord harmonics on the 'outro'). Scotty says it can be played out of the standard A6 tuning and showed me how to quickly move A's to B's and C's to C#'s, etc to get from C6 to A6. What a guy!!! I'll keep you posted as I get it figured out. For me, tab is only the starting point; the nuances can only be figured out from careful listening (I may be preaching to the choir here). |
