I always thought this word pronounced the "English" way, with the last part the same as "rose" (long "o", silent "e") but at a Big Island kanikapila we played a song from "the blue book" (He Mele Aloha) and the group sang the word as tuber-rose-ay (with the "e" as the Hawaiian "long a" sound). Was this a style thing or is that the "Hawaiian" pronunciation?

I ask because it's one of my favorite flowers for a lei and I'd hate to always be asking for it and pronouncing it wrong while in Hawaii...

Thanks for any help.

It's a loan-word, so pronuciation could be all over the place. Sonny sings it as "toobeh-roseh," with the final vowel *very* slightly shifted toward the diphthong "ay." I'm not sure what current Hawaiian-language experts think of Sonny's pronuciation, but Kiki told me that he was pretty careful about it.

Good question to submit to Keola Donaghy at nahenahe.net

I asked him via email -- will let you know if/when he answers

E nana, e ho'olohe. E pa'a ka waha, e hana ka lima.

Keola answered.

That's the way that it would be sung in Hawaiian, just as "rose" is pronounced "rose-eh". The "s" is not pronounced like a "z" as it is in English after the "o", but as "s".

Thank you, everyone! Now I can be certain of what I'm asking for at the lei stand--but I know a tuberose by any other pronunciation would smell just as sweet (cribbing from Mr. Shakespeare)...

just to add...when singing "tuberose" we may say "too-bah-row-zay" just to keep in time with the song. but if you go to a lei stand, I would just say "too-bah-rose" at least that's been my experiences in the islands. but don't worry, any local would know what you meant and would be glad to help you...
