It doesn't talk about it in the obit from the Seattle Times (at http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/obituaries/2003467395_tutmarc08e.html), but Bud Tutmarc was an acclaimed Hawaiian-style steel guitarist, too.

I was forced to listen Bud Tutmarc's music as a kid, both Hawaiian tunes and old hymns. It was one of the things that put me off of Hawaiian music and the steel guitar at an early age. I've come to appreciate it now and appreciate his skill and touch on the steel. RIP, Mr. Tutmarc.

Doing my research on Chris Knutsen led me to Bud Tutmarc's father, Paul Sr. (I think the Tutmarcs and the Knutsens may have known each other). The Tutmarcs were also great friends of Sol Hoopii, and I've been quite desperate to find a connection between all of these men. I tried to meet Mr. Tutmarc earlier, but sadly it was too late; he had already been in poor health for years.

Speaking of Sol Hoopii, I had recently obtained the box set of recordings Mr. Tutmarc put out featuring himself, his father, and Sol playing in the 40s and 50s. As someone who didn't grow up with any of that music, I simply appreciated the music as Hawaiian songs. Beautiful playing.

I live here in Seatlle, and spoke to Bud over the phone about 10 years ago. Also, there was an article about the Tutmarc's in an old Steel Guitar International. I'll try to dig it up. Paul, Sr. was responsible for Regal guitars back in the 30's. He built them here in Seattle. He also befriended Sol Ho'o'pi'i, and Sol lived with the Tutmarc's at the end of his life, I don't remember whether it was before or after Sol went blind, but certainly after his conversion. I tried to call Bud about 3 years ago, but his son said he was to sick to talk.

A branch of the Tutmarc family have a real estate company on the north end of Seattle. The hill just to the NE of Lynnwood was known as Tutmarc Hill (still is to us old crusty guys). Bonny Guitar was related to them.

There is a nice obit about Bud in today's Seattle PI.
