A few years back on one of our trips to Kauai I met Kirby Keough playing at Joe’s on the Green in Poi Pu. We chatted a bit on his break and since it was Christmas time he invited me to play Mele Kalikimaka with him. That was is 2002. We didn’t cross paths again until this last November on our vacation to Kauai. We had dinner at Joe’s on the Thursday evening before flying home the next day and Kirby was gigging that night.
Kirby is a wonderful human being and a true musician. He has a wonderful voice and can play all the Hawaiian standards with an enormous amount of feeling and passion. He is fortunate enough to be able to live on Kauai and support his family by playing the music he loves. He can even choose whether he wants to play on Saturdays or not as this is his “free day”.
Long story even longer. He sent me a CD of him playing with Kaui Low, an amazing guitarist and ukulele player, who suddenly passed away last year. The CD contained all of their favorite Hawaiian standards. He told me to learn the songs and he would “test me” next year and that I could do a gig with him while I was there. I told him that I really liked Wahine Ilikea and asked him to record it and send it to me. I received the file today and added an ukulele track with the Spruce Top Tenor.
I sure wish I was living in Kauai because I know Kirby and I would have a ball putting some stuff together. I hope you enjoy it as much as I am.
