Hey, Karm here!
I am currently studying African and afro-Cuban rhythms here in Seattle and recently my wife and I traveled to Kauai to enjoy the holidays. We talked to several true locals and I felt so welcome, almost like coming home.
Anyway the idea came to me that I would like to drum a few Polynesian rhythms, yet I do not know about any books or dare I say sheet music.
I am hoping that someone will read this message and show me the path.
thx, Karm

Aloha e Karm,
You should get some videos of ipu, pahu, and the many other percussive instruments that back up Hula Kahiko. Merry Monarch videos, especially the first one, are really good for that. Also look at mele.com. I think you will find that the patterns are simpler than the polyrhythms you are used to playing. However the range of percussive instruments is quite great, from pebbles to anything that can be banged together :-) actually.

Welcome to the forum, Karm. There is a pretty active group that meets regularly in the Seattle area. Check out the Kanikapila Forum section. Maybe you could attend one of their gatherings and see how you could fit in. |
