I'm just curious about him. I have his first 2 CD's and I love it!!! I love his original mele's, love the fact that he writes and speaks our `olelo and I am a fan of his, which I had the opportunity to meet him several years ago. I also read that his mentors who also passed on their mana`o to him were Uncle Dennis Kamakahi, Kumu Kaha`i Topolinski (his cousin) and from the University of Hawai`i Center for Hawaiian Studies Ku`ualoha Meyer. He too is also a slacker from my understanding that his uncle Cyril Pahinui taught him. Does anyone know what he is doing now? Is he coming out with another CD? Does anyone know if he conducts workshops? Please let me know....
Aloha,
Kawehi

Keali`i himself has been posting to Taropatch a few times recently, filling us in on how he's doing and what the future holds for him. If you do a search for his name, you'll find many of these postings, as well as contact information for this wonderful musician. |

Thanks Kawehi! As for what I am doing now, i'm actually recording my third CD. After I performed at the Santa Cruz concert back in Sept. 2006, I had another back surgery which got infected, hence my very long leave of absence from performing, which the infection limits my movement. I gotta use a cane now to walk far, but ah, no worries. I am still writing (per my other posts, lol) and yes Ku`ualoha, Dennis and Kaha`i really are my foundation for being whom I am today, and its the fans who motivate me in continuing to perform and write. I just want to thank all of you for your continuous support for our culture.
Aloha & God Bless-
Keali`i |

Thanks for the update Keali'i! Sorry, I haven't been in contact with you for a while cause I been busy. I can't wait to hear your third CD since I got your other two CDs! Sorry to hear about your back surgery and how it got infected. I always pray for you. Thank you for posting on TP! I am still your number one fan! Keep up the great work! Hope to hear from you again soon. Either by phone or e-mail.

Watch it there Alana, I think I might be a bigger fan of his than you are! Hahahahahahaha! anyways, e Keali'i, I can't wait to hear it also. I'm so lucky that I made it home from Maui last night, even though it was really late. My 'ohana and I got stuck in Chicago, but we were able to make it out of the airport, thank God! Well, I hope all is well with you and maybe I can talk to you some time soon too. E malama pono, Alex "Alika" |

Same goes for me, as I stated in the other topics, Keali'i and Korrie will always be in my prayers and in my thoughts daily. There isn't a moment that I think about him. Keali'i, get better soon and speedy recovery.

Yesterday I put "Ka Ulu Mae'ole" in my CD player, turned it on, and then shut it right back off and said, "I can't do it! I just can't!" Otherwise, I would have become very sad, maybe even started crying, which I didn't want to do. There's a part of me that wants to play his albums and a part of me that doesn't at a time like this. Understood? |

not understood. keali'i's mele was meant to be heard and played by this new generation. he told me himself that it's good to play the old stuff but his compositions are meant for us to be inspired to keep writing new music. i play his songs at home, in the car, and on stage and i am grateful to have had the opportunity to share the stage with him and back him up at his magical show in santa cruz. keali'i is going through a lot right now. let's honor him and keep his beautiful music alive.

Alika, I do understand what you mean. My brother passed away two weeks ago and I found that I could not listen to Aloha 'Oe while driving without having to pull off the road for a spell. The first time I played it after his death, on 5/8/07, the power of the words and music just broke me down. In his eulogy I include a verse from Aloha 'Oe. Seems that I can read the lyrics but if I hear music...well, I tend to lose it. Keali'i is still with us and may recover given more time. Maybe you should listen to his music and just let it go. Heal yourself with his music. Aloha Bob

Bob, Condolences re your brother. When my dad dies a few years ago I found the sadness came in waves. For me, Amy Gilliom and Na Leo helped get me through it. Couldn't play solo Keola for months 'cause we used to listen to it together -- and he loved it when I approximated a Keola arrangement -- now when I play it, it's almost like I can feel him next to me -- but its very positive now. Alika, I would suggest you to play Keali'i and cry through it if you have to. Some things just need to be cried about. |

I still play Keali'i's two CD every now and then and it helps because I cry out and it helps to sooth my soul. Keali'i is still with us so I usually play one of his songs and just let it go. It still hard for me but I am working through it. It helps to cry it out. He's been going through a lot and I feel for him and I find myself thinking about him.

Aloha e Alana, Mahalo for the message. I will try to do it more often, like you. Off subject, but a good question. How's California? |
