What can anyone tell me about some vintage lap steels? I have a friend who has a National and a McKinney lap steel from the 30s or 40s, also a Dickerson with mother of toilet seat finish. Has matching (color at least) vintage amps as well. What is something like this worth? I have looked on ebay and pries vary wildly. All are in good playing condition. The national and the mcKinney ar identical except for color, so i suspect both were made by the same outfit. They sound much nicer that the Dickerson. All three are in original condition, all in hardshell original cases.

Karl, if you want to steal the National, I'll hide it for you. |

Hey, I actually thought of that...he has so many guitars laying around (i did not see one speck of food anywhere, every surface in the place was covered with guitars of all descriptions....and, yes, he is no longer married) he never would have missed one. but, he is a friend.... |

Sorry not to have responded right away, but.... The best source of info about lap steel guitars, IMHO, is Brad's Page of Steel. He has a list of old steel makers at http://www.well.com/~wellvis/gitinfo.html Dickerson, it turns out, evolved into Supro. Brad says that Sol Ho'o'pi'i endorsed them. From that page you can get back to his home page. It's great fun browsing through the whole site, and he updates it frequently. As for you, TS, see ya tomorrow at da' Kona Kitchen. 9, eh? |
