Is the tradition of mele ma`i uniquely Hawaiian or is something similar present in other cultures? Was it supposed to be a self-fulfilliing prophecy or simply wishful thinking? The imagery and "euphemisms", as it were, sometimes are quite amusing. I remember one about Kawika Kalakaua that talked about a large, heavy, gold brick.
Was that just as important to the ordinary folks as it was to the ali`i? Was it only the ali`i who had mele ma`i?
