My friend and I are going to be living in NY and we were wondering if there's anyone in NY who plays or teaches. If anyone knows where we can find Hawaiian food that would be great too though I haven't seen or heard of any.
thanks, K

By "NY", do you mean the city or the state?
Andy is in NJ and goes into The City a lot. He might respond.
We are in CT, about 2 hrs from GCT and only get into The City few times a year.
Where will you be living?

When I see New York and Slack Key in the title of a thread- I gotta respond! Where are you, New York is a big place! I live in Manhattan and play slack key. By any chance, do you play ukulele as well?
Put Sunday June 3rd on your calendar right now. That is the day of the Annual Hawaiian Picnic in Central Park - lots of slack key, ukulele, hula, good food and plenty of aloha!

K-
Welcome to the 'patch and New York. I'd be happy to get together sometime to hang out and play some music. There are not a lot of us playing but there are a few.
Hawaiian food? Not a lot but there is L&L and Roy's. There used to be 3 L&L's but it looks like some closed. I know the one near Penn Station changed its name. Hakata Grill, in the Theater District, is not Hawaiian but the owner is from Hawai`i.
Claudia beat me. Claudia, are we playing some slack key on March 24? |

A few more things that I forgot to mention.
There is a group called Halawai ("to meet") that I am involved with in New York. It's a networking/community group where we are trying to get people with ties to Hawai`i together. One of the purposes is to answer questions like the ones you asked for people new to the city. I will keep you updated.
Upcoming performances: Hapa April 4th at Merkin Hall

Aloha Andy!
It's killing me to miss out, but I cannot join you at Tommy's workshop on March 24th - that is my children's Spring Break, so I will be out-of-town with them.
But I hope we can get together another time! Lets get our Taylors together and have a slack key jam - I have learned so much since I saw you last!

THanks for all the responses and welcome. We haven't found a place to live yet but we're aiming for Queens/somewhere affordable. Hope to get that out of the way asap. YEs, Claudia I do have an ukulele somewhere there. I will definitely mark my calendar for June 3rd though. Wherever we end up we will be proud to represent the few slack players in NY! |

Hey, I know its been eons but my friend and I finally settled in Astoria/Queens. Even after that I had to get my acoustic over here which I finally did. Just loaded a slack cd on my computer and getting back into it. Thanks Claudia, Reid, Andy and Art for the welcome. I will keep in better touch now that I've got a solid place to live.

Not much slack key action here in NY, unfortunately. Last time I heard any live slack key was when Led Ka'apana and Bob Brozman played in a park in Manhattan for free about two years ago. It would be great to hear those guys again. In fact, though I've played with quite a few musicians in the area, not even one of them has even heard of slack key.
I guess slack key guitar isn't "progressive" enough for people around here, unless we start tuning to Cb diminished 13 and playing Hula Blues in 13/8. |
