I'm new to Slack key and I'm looking for any jams or other gatherings going on around Los Angeles. Anyone know of anything?

David, Every Tuesday night, the Southern california Slack Key Society hosts a Slack key Open Mike at kaisen's Sushi and hawaiian Grille in Oceanside, CA. Just off the I-5 exit at Oceanside BLVD. Oops, I'm late heading there now!

Oh, that sounds great! Unfortunately I'm in Hollywood and I don't have a car. I might convince my girlfriend to go down there some Tuesday, though. We'll see....

If you can take the train down I'm sure someone would be happy to pick you up and drop you off at the Oceanside station. |
Craig My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can. |

You might want to check up on Beach Bum Tom's group:
You see, Huntington Beach is the "TRUE" Mecca of all things ukulele. It's the hub. It houses Island Bazaar. At I.B. on Tuesdays Uncle Henry Kamae (nephew of Eddie Kamae) leads "Kolohe" a group of about 50 who concentrate on Hawaiian music and play MANY events. Wednesdays the IB owner, Shirley Orlando, holds beginner and intermediate uke classes. Thursday nights we hold "Ukulele Jam" attended by about 50-60 folks playing all kinds of music. Island Bazaar holds workshops and concerts, recently featuring Kimo Hussey (this week), Janet Klein and the Parlor Boys, Victoria Vox, James Hill, Little Rev, etc, and 7/8 we're having Brittni Paiva again. Gigs come out of IB to all sorts of places. In August 50 of us play all month at the HB Pier. OK, that's HB. In neighboring Corona Del Mar Tony Cappa leads "Oasis Strummers" every Monday who are 100 strong. Bill Tapia plays there regularly. A bit to the north are the South Bay Strummers on Saturday with Clint Fisher and 50 or so uke-sters. KonaDon Price teaches uke at the Seal Beach Senior Center, the HB Senior Center and the Fountain Valley Senior Center. Bill Tapia and Pat Enos are neighbors and "locals." Uncle Bobby Tomei plays at all these groups. We are the home of strumming whiz Travis Harrelson. Then there are the large Hawaiian groups led by Lincoln Kaia and Charlie Ki'aha. Bob's Ohana restaurant with its kanikapila atmosphere is right up the street. So, my dear ricdoug, I commend you and all the uke-sters to our immediate south and wish you all the best......grow and prosper. But I humbly contend you might think it through a bit more thoroughly when you use the phrase "Uke Capital of the Continental US," because up here in the Orange County area we are pretty happy and proud of what the movement is doing here. Aloha nui loa. BBT |

Watch for Manhattan Beach kani ka pila and use public transportation. Come to terminus of green line and call for ride 2 miles west. probably won't be for couple months; having surgery early Aug... However a smaller group of ki ho'alu folks get together more often than kani ka pila. if you are interested in that, i will let you know. by the way, girlfriends/wives welcome to come listen, play ukulele, read, walk to beach, do "hand-work", etc. auntie nancy cook |

Aloha Geek, I checked your profile and don't see any info about you.... I guess if you're interested in ukulele, contact ricdoug - - don't know who he is either (58 guitars? must be some rich guy). anyway, there will be a kanikapila the last weekend in Manhattan Beach in July. If you have a preference about which day, please speak up quickly. Whereas we don't turn away ukulele players, this isn't a uke jam session. We share our slack key techniques, current songs, etc; and do play some songs and do a bit of singing together. Are you still here on taropatch? Are you interested? n |

Nancy, Ricdoug is in the local Carlsbad ukulele group [Ukulele Society of America]. Ric used to own a music store (among other things). |

My wife laghed hard at "rich guy"!
We have slack key guitarists perform at our Kanikapilas, too. I always bring extra ukes and am ready and willing to get you started! Ric
