Shortly after I began posting here on Taro Patch, someone sent me a private e-mail cautioning me about using the term Hawai`i Nei, and that it was improper to use that term unless you were on one of the islands.
Today, I was looking at Leilehua's website at the link shared by Mark Nelson, and found the following information. May I suggest that you visit her web site. There is much good information available there. Mahalo to Mark for sharing that link and mahalo to Leilehua for putting together such great information.
Today, we are returning to calling the entire island chain "Hawai`i Nei," (Huh-vai-ee-nay) which means "Beloved Hawai`i," and we are returning to calling the Island of Hawai`i "Moku Hawai`i," which means "Hawai`i Island."
"Hawai`i Ne`i" (Hawai`i right here)refers to the island when one is actually on it. So, if you are traveling to O`ahu, when you are there, you can say O`ahu ne`i." Proper use of the traditional names is an important part of retaining our heritage.

Mahalo nui loa! I had actually never heard it referred to as Hawai'i Ne'i before. I've always heard it as Hawai'i Nei. |

I've never heard "ne'i" used except before "o" as in "o ne'i nei", in which case it is a contraction of "o 'ane'i". The Hawaiian dictionary says it can also be used before "ma" and "i". I've never heard it used after a place name in this way. If you want to specify that you mean "here on Hawai'i island" you could say "ma Hawai'i mokupuni nei" or "ma ka moku o Keawe nei." |
