Help ...my Sennheiser microphone broke , need some input what to buy . I know the Shure sm58 is what a lot of people use, but have been told other mics just as good for less money. Currently have 2 Audix om2 and and old Shure 565sd . Anyone have the AKG d880m , or any of the AKG or sennheiser mics like the sennheiser e835 ....can get these mics for a lot less than the shure sm 58 , AKG d880m for half the price..can get the shure sm58 for $90 . Probably will pick up 2 mics. Mahalo.....
Is this for guitar or vocals? The SM58 is a vocal mic, and not a very good one at that. It's popular because it's designed to be a rugged workhorse in live performance environments where a forgiving mic is more important than a quality one.
Craig My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can.
I think it's important to define what your goal is here. If you plan to sell copies of your recordings, or operate as a commercial studio, get the best you can afford. But if you merely want to check your learning progress, you may want to economize futher.

I agree with rendesvous1840. You can get a $70 large condensor mic that will give pretty good results. That is the kind of mic I am using...why? mostly cause it came "free" with my digital recorder...and secondly because I am out of money after buying guitars. :) If I had more money, I would follow Mark's suggestions.
