Everyone is so nice. The weather is nice. The music on the CD is nice (Cousin Patrick Landeza); work is nice (now that I'm pau for the day). Auntie Genoa's `Ohana is nice. Can't wait to get to O`ahu, where most every one is nice, kaukau is nice, weather is nice, scenery is nice, etc.

Got the following note from her son, Eric,
She is still very active in the community performing when ever possible. She will be honored this coming Friday by the Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce with the O'o Award. She still performs at the Marriott Resort & Spa in Waikiki.

| Slipry1 and I had the opportunity to see Auntie Genoa last January. Great set, great band! Jack even got a steel lesson from Alan Akaka, Auntie's steel player! |

| Mahalo for sharing Wanda! Its good to hear that Auntie Genoa is still active in the community. Its a good thing that she is being honored because she does so much for the community especially spreading the aloha spirit. She deserves it. |

Auntie Genoa is the last link to the era of Johnny Almeida, Alvin Kaleolani Isaacs, Joe Keawe, Andy Cummings and other legends who are gone. And she is still performing! What a treasure.

Aloha, Auntie Maria. Thanks for posting that. When Paul & I hele O`ahu in May, we are going to Chai's, at least once. Good grub, good music, and a beautiful restaurant. The best of the best share their music there. Last time we were there, we met Roland Cazimero. Have a lovely picture of Paul & Roland. They could be brothers, ha-ha.

Aunty Genoa is a national treasure.
One of my New York kanikapila buddies, Jason, told me to find her at the Marriot when I was in Oahu last March. I went to the hotel on a Thursday night, it was pouring rain, and even though the hotel said she would not be appearing, I hung around the pool deck and sure enough - out she came , with her ukulele and band.
It was a magical evening. In spite of the torrential rain that never relented, and the flood of water all around the stage, Aunty Genoa sang and played a two hour set. This was beautiful Hawaiian music I had longed to hear, live. Her voice is so strong and her smile so genuine - everyone there that evening was smitten. I asked her to play Papalina Lahilahi and she did,with such joy and enthusiasm. She has so much Aloha!
I had been studying her singing for quite some time and to see her was such an inspiration. I had been working on finding my "ha'i" and to hear her in person was just the boost I needed. After a few more months and much practise, I am having so much fun now with the "break" in my voice when I sing Hawaiian music. And I have Aunty Genoa to thank.
I have a photo of her I would like to post, so I'll ask Andy (Andy!- email on the way with attachment...) if he could put it up on this thread. Mahalo, Andy!

| Great photos! After watching her show at Carngie hall, I remember seeing Auntie Genoa Keawe walking down the streets of New York barefoot. She's one brave lady! |

What great pix!! It is wonderful to hear Auntie Genoa is still going strong. We were at her 80th birthday celebration at the Hawaiian Regent some years ago. A very memorable evening with lots of other musicians attending in her honor.

I'm so glad you got to see her. I've already said this to my parents: "If we ever go to O'ahu, we're going to the Hawaiian Regent on whatever that Thursday night will be so that we can see Auntie Genoa Keawe." Claudia, you have now made me want to hear you sing something. I'm just curious, can you hold the high note in "Alika?" I can but not as long as Auntie does. Maybe it'll come with practice though. Any techniques that anyone can give me would be appreciated. |

Alika,
All you have to do is take a deep breath and let the air out slowly. Make a big smile and use your stomach by pushing down to extend your breath. This is the instructions she gives during her shows when she attempts to teach the audience.quote:

Aloha! Who is this if you don't mind me asking? Are you related to Auntie?
That message was posted a long time ago btw. Now I have gained a lot of confidence when I sing it, even though I'm not a ha'i singer. I think I would have been good at it about four or five years ago, but I'm not now because I've been trained in classical and opera for four years and still am. Thus, it's hard to do the break sometimes. However, I think I tell the story well. What do you all think is the more important of the two?
For the person who replied to that post, please send me an e-mail if you're interested in hearing my recording of it or just to talk story. Would love that.
