This mele is so sweet...I was just listening to it in the car by Andy Cummings.

I thought I knew and understood the words but just for some reason decided to look them up on huapala.org. I actually thought the second line in first verse was speaking about a pregnant (hapai) flower...thought maybe the kaona was about how beautiful the woman was when pregnant, and same time giving honor to Kaua`i for its beauty. Duh.

And just for the record, Andy Cummings says "ona-ona"

Still is a beautiful song. I think that shall be my April song to study.

Kaua`i Beauty - by Henry Wai`au

Hanohano Kaua`i Manokalanipö
Kihäpai pua ua kaulana

`Ohu`ohu i ka maile a`o ka nahele
I ke `ala onaona o ka mokihana

I wili `ia me ka maile lau li`ili`i
Ke Ôala hoÔoheno o ka malihini

Ha`ina `ia mai ana ka puana
Ku`u lei mokihana e moani nei

Ha`ina `ia mai ana ka puana
Ku`u lei mokihana poina `ole

Glorious is Kaua`i of Manokalanipo
A famous flower garden

Adorned with maile of the forest
And the sweet fragrance of mokihana

Entwined with small leafed maile
A fragrance cherished by visitors

Tell the refrain
My mokihana lei whose fragrance is wind-borne

Tell the refrain
My unforgettable mokihana lei

Wanda, "hapai" can mean "pregnant", but also can mean "carrying".

Aloha Sarah, and everyone else! That is indeed...a very sweet tune. I use to try and play it as much as possible "Kaua'i Beauty" is especially sweet in C-tuning. Now I have to try see if I still no how to play it...ha!ha!ha! A Hui Hou!
