Howdy - I just joined this forum. I live in Austin, TX and I am big fan of slack-key music and Hawaiian culture in general. I play guitar myself - altho mostly electric. I just started learning Hawaiian - and I am looking for online resources - especially web news radio would be helpful. I would be greateful for any pointers or reccomendations.
A hui hou,
JT

Howdy! Welcome to Taro Patch. You will find a bunch of kind, helpful, knowledgable, funny, rascally, smart, talented folks here on Taro Patch. Please join in the conversations. Lots can be learned and lots can be shared.
I read your profile on My Space. You don't like very much music, eh?

At the top of each page, under the Taropatch.net logo, there is a (black with white lettering) menu bar. The second choice (LEARN) is a good starting point. |

Makalo a nui loa! Nice and friendly welcome! Yes, Wanda - I do not like much music at all ;-) Sbdy told me once that Tibetans believe that the greatest sin is ignorance - acting without being conscious of the consequences. I think that something like applies to music - when it is created without awareness and without inspiration - it leaves you weak. I think that is where my dividing line would be.

Good thought...especially the use of the word "ignorance", which means to be exposed to the truth yet to still ignore it, hence the root word.
A small but good example is given by the programmer's I work with who insist on pronouncing Linux as "Lynn-nucks", but it is a proper name christened by Linus Torvalds (a Finn) and is properly pronounced "Lean-nooks". He even has a recording available on the web where he pronounces it correctly, but people I know still say it wrong on purpose, hence ignoring the truth. Some have PhD's in computer science, but are good examples of the true meaning of ignorance.

Thanks, but actually not so good. See a neurosurgeon in a week. Sitting and surfing the web is very unhealthy, especially for S1, L2 and all the nerves - nerves everywhere. Very nervy. Gotta get off my butt.

Aloha nui! He mai! Mai! Mai! Pehea 'oe? Maika'i no au, mahalo. I too can teach you some 'olelo if you are interested. Believe it or not, Alana and I teach beginning Hawaiian lessons on the phone every once in a while. We do this through a conference call service that is toll free for everyone. If you have any questions about the calls or the language in general or would simply like to talk story with us, please email both of us. We'd love to hear from you.
